New HS boys head coaches are announced by Henson

The Pecos Eagles have filled one head coaching vacancy in basketball, but are still looking to fill another, according to athletic director Chris Henson, who had also hired several new coaches and made a couple of job position changes for the high school and junior high teams.

Sammy Soliz has been named the new varsity head coach for Pecos, replacing Chaun Brooks. Soliz served as freshman basketball coach for the Eagles last season.

“We’re still looking for a head girls basketball coach. We did recommend one, but she was voted down by the board,” Henson said. The position just came open last month, when Debbie Garcia resigned to take a position with the school district’s new “Lead Teachers, District-Wide” program.

Henson said he looked for possible applicants this past week during the annual Texas High School Coaches Association meeting, but was unable to find a person to submit to the school board. “I polled about 30 people, but no one wants to come this far out right now, so we’re in a bit of a bind. We’re still looking and still taking applications,” he said.

Three other head coaching changes at the high school level involve boys track, where Derek Price moves up from assistant to head coach this season, boys golf, where Gaylon Doan will be the new head coach, and varsity powerlifting, where Jeff Green will take over from Fred Howard. Price served as assistant track coach last year after winning the Class 1A state title the previous season as head coach in Rotan.

Doan is the husband of Eagles’ girls golf coach Tina Doan, and a former assistant coach in football and softball for Pecos. Green is new to the district, and will also serve as offensive line coach in football. The other new coaches for Pecos include Ken Wallace, who will be the new head junior varsity football and an assistant varsity coach; Alberto Franco, who’ll be the freshman baseball and junior high football and basketball coach; Paul Slocum, who’ll be junior high football, basketball and track coach; Martin Mosser, the new assistant tennis coach; Gary Garcia, new junior high volleyball and swimming coach; and Laura Lara, new junior high volleyball, girls basketball and golf coach.
