Coaches plan football clinic for 5-9 grades

Pecos High School football coaches will be conducting a camp for incoming fifth through ninth graders the first week of June, while the summer 7-on-7 football competition for current Eagle high school players will also get underway that week.

Eagles head coach Chris Henson said the inaugural Pecos Eagle Football Camp will run from June 4-8 at the PHS football field, from 9 a.m, until 12 noon. The fee for the camp is $25 per player, and will include a T-shirt.

Weight training, speed training and work on specialized football positions will be included in the camp. For further information, call the Pecos High School field house at 447-7220. Henson said the first of the 7-on-7 games will be held on Thursday, June 7, at Eagle Stadium and will feature varsity and junior varsity level games against Alpine and Fort Stockton. “We’ll also have a lineman challenge against those teams, and it will start about 6 o’clock,” he said.

Two days after the Pecos games, the Eagles will compete in the state 7-on-7 state qualifiers event at El Paso Hanks High School. The other two dates on the 7-on-7 schedule are Thursday, June 21 at Alpine and Thursday, June 28 in Fort Stockton.

Summer 3-on-3 hoops signing-up until June 1

The Reeves County Community Sports and Recreation Department will be hosting 3-on-3 summer basketball leagues next month for high school and junior high players with registration now through next week.

The 3-on-3 basketball leagues are open to boys and girls entering grades 7 through 12 this August. Entry fee will be $10 a player, with a sign-up deadline of Friday, June 1. Late registrations will be taken after that date, with a sign-up fee of $25 per player.

Parents for both the Grades 7-12 basketball must provide a copy of the child’s birth certificate at the time they return their registration forms, and both parents must sign the registration form. The forms are available at the RCCRD office during regular hours, Monday through Friday afternoons and evenings and Saturday mornings.

For further information, call the RCCRD office at 447-9776.

P-B-T sets dates, sign-ups for summer sports courses

The Pecos-Barstow-Toyah ISD summer recreation programs will begin following the end of school in June, though sign-ups in some sports will take place prior to the end of school next week.

Fees for the summer program are $5 per student in each family, with the fee for one sport covering all other sports, with the exception of the summer learn-to-swim program.

Registration for that program was held earlier this month, and classes will run from Monday, May 29 to next Friday, June 2, and then from June 5-9 and June 12-16.

Students participating in more than one sport can show their payment receipt after their first registration.

Summer track will be supervised by coach Thomas Hughes, and will mornings from June 4 through July 13. Registration is open to students entering kindergarten through 12th grade. Scheduled track meets are on Saturdays, June 2 in Crane (girls only), June 9 in Odessa, June 16 at Eagle Stadium, June 23 in San Angelo and June 30 at Iraan. Hughes said competitors must go to either the Odessa or San Angelo meets to qualify for regionals, on July 7 in San Angelo. The state summer meet is on July 14 in Round Rock.

Students are asked to wear running shoes, a T-shirt and shorts and bring a water jug to each day’s class. For further information, contact coach Hughes at the PHS field house (447-7220).

PHS tennis coach Bernadette Ornelas will handle the summer tennis, which will be divided into two sessions, June 4-14 and June 18-28. Starting times daily will be 8 to 8:45 a.m. for first through third graders, 9 to 9:45 a.m. for fourth through sixth graders, and 10 to 10:45 a.m. for junior high and high school players.

Players must provide a tennis racquet, water bottle, hand towel, sunscreen and a cap or visor. The first sign-up for the summer golf program was on Thursday afternoon, with the second scheduled for this coming Wednesday, May 30 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Reeves County Golf Course. Golf classes will begin on Monday, May 4 at the golf course, with Tina Doan as the instructor.

Tentative schedule times are 8 to 8:45 a.m. Monday through Thursday for first and second graders , 9 to 9:45 a.m. for fifth through seventh graders; 10 to 10:45 a.m. for third and fourth graders, and 11 a.m. to 12 noon and 5 to 8 p.m. for eighth grade and high school golfers. Times could change depending on the number of participants and class size.

Players will have to provide golf clubs, three golf balls, tees and a cap or hat. Water bottles are optional. For further information, call coach Tina Doan at 447-9347.

The field house weight room and the Pecos High School gym will both have morning and late afternoon-evening hours this summer. The weight room will be available for students entering grades 7-12. The session will be June 4 through August 4 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon and 5 to 8 p.m.

Summer basketball and volleyball will also begin on June 5 and continue through Aug 4. The two sports will be held on alternate days, also from 9 a.m. until 12 noon and from 5-8 p.m. in the evenings.

Also in June is the summer learn-to swim program at the Pecos High School pool, but the sign-up dates for those two sessions were this past Monday and Tuesday. However, the PHS pool will be open to students and adults on Tuesdays and Thursdays during June for family night.

The fee will be $2 per person, and $1 for children 3 and under, and the pool will be open from 7 to 8:30 p.m. For more information, contact PHS swimming coach Terri Morse at 447-7242.
