Big changes for Eagle volleyball

After finishing the 2006 season with their best results since the early 1990s, the Pecos Eagles volleyball team will be making a big change early in their 2007 pre-district schedule, while upgrading the rest of their schedule slightly from a year ago, when they start the next season this August.

Head coach Helen Kimbrough’s team went 27-10 a year ago, advancing to the Region I-3A semifinals before losing to eventual regional champion Canyon. And that’s where the Eagles will be going the opening week of this coming season, as they’ve replaced the Sandhills Invitational on their schedule with a trip to the Canyon Tournament on Aug. 17-18.

Pecos’ JV team will still be going to Monahans that opening weekend, and both teams along with the ninth graders will be in Monahans on Aug. 11, for a preseason scrimmage against the Loboes and schools from Odessa. On Aug. 14, the Eagles will open their regular season by hosting the Wink Wildcats, while the following Tuesday, they’ll play their first dual meet of 2007, in Van Horn against that group of Eagles and the Marfa Shorthorns.

The Pecos Cantaloupe Classic will be on Aug. 23-25, and will be the Eagles’ last home games until Sept. 25, when they’ll take on Kermit. In-between, the Eagles will have trips to Alpine, Dell City, Van Horn and Andrews, along with a return visit to Alpine for the Sul Ross Invitational Tournament.

District 2-3A play will open up with a pair of home matches, on Oct 2 against Fort Stockton and Oct. 6 versus Monahans, which will be seeking its sixth straight district title. The Eagles then play all three of their district road matches, before coming home to close regular season play on Oct. 23 against Presidio.

Pecos’ JV and freshmen will also compete in the Cantaloupe Classic Tournament. The ninth graders will be in Monahans for tournament play the following weekend, and both the JV and freshmen will play their final tournament in Fort Stockton on Sept. 7-8.
