Junior high golfers in Stockton
for area tournament’s 2nd round

Pecos Eagles junior high golfers will play the second round of their five-round area tournament in Fort Stockton on Saturday, after Pecos’ boys placed second and the girls sixth in the opening round in Monahans last week.

The seventh and eighth grade boys shot a 389, while Andrews won with a 366 score and Monahans was third with a 398 total. Drake Bradley had the low score of the day, with an 84, while Dane Daniel shot a 98, Heath Armstrong had a 99, Everett Parker a 108 and Nathan Duke a 109 for Pecos.

“Drake beat all the Andrews boys, but when they have three of the Top 5 scores and we only have one of the Top 5 it’s hard to keep up,” said coach Ronnie Daniel. “But we still beat Monahans on their home course.

“We won’t have Heath on Saturday, but we’re nine strokes ahead of Monahans, and hopefully we can stay there,” he added.

Daniel took two other golfers to Monahans. Joseph Ontiveros shot a 107 and Eric Salcido had a 127 for the Eagles.

After Monahans in the standings came Andrews ‘B’ at 410, Monahans ‘B’ at 438, Fort Stockton at 464, Kermit at 472 and Fort Stockton ‘B’ at 517.

The girls had a tougher time, shooting a 266 for their nine-hole tournament. “The girls were nervous about their first meet. Hopefully they will make up some strokes at Fort Stockton this week,” said coach Crissy Zuniga.

Amada Herrera shot a 59, Rica Pina had a 67, Marissa Lyles a 69 and Carolina Briones had a 71 for Pecos at the Ward County Golf Course. Andrews placed first overall with a 205 score and were followed by Monahans at 211, Fort Stockton at 241, Andrews ‘B’ at 247 and Kermit at 250. Monahans ‘B’ had a 267 score.

Eagles shuffling lineups against Jackets, Panthers

The Pecos Eagles softball team may make some changes today due to flexibility. The Eagles’ baseball team will be making some out of necessity.

Pecos’ girls close out their 2004 regular season at home this afternoon against the Kermit Yellowjackets, in a 5 p.m. game, while the boys host the Fort Stockton Panthers in a 7 p.m. start.

For the girls, changes are possible in part because the game has no effect on the regular season standings. Pecos clinched their fifth trip to the playoffs in the past six seasons on Tuesday, with a 6-1 home field victory over Fort Stockton, and will face Lubbock Cooper in the bi-district round of the Class 3A playoffs.

The boys will be trying to clinch their sixth straight post-season trip with a win tonight. But they’ll have to do it without sophomore Josh Anchondo, who will be ineligible through the second week of May. Anchondo has four of Pecos’ six wins in District 4-3A play, though he did take the loss this past Tuesday at Monahans, 6-5, as the Eagles’ defense made six errors behind Anchondo after committing only four errors in his previous four starts.

Jose Reyes has Pecos’ other two district wins, including a 13-strikeout, 2-1 victory earlier this month in Fort Stockton. Rayos will start tonight on the mound, coach Elias Payan said, but Pecos will have to make some other changes too replace Anchondo, who normally plays shortstop when he’s not pitching.

“Isaiah Rayos will be at shortstop and at second base I’m going to play Miguel Estrada,” Payan said. Rayos finished off the Eagles’ 10-8 victory two weeks ago in Presidio playing short, but has started at second base during district play. Estrada has been used mainly as an outfielder this season, but Payan said, “Miguel’s a natural infielder. He just went out to the outfield because that’s where he felt he had a chance to play at the beginning of the year. I don’t think we’re going to lose anything defensively.”

Fort Stockton saw its last hopes of making the playoffs ended by a 5-3 loss at home to Presidio on Tuesday, which left the Panthers with a 1-6 district mark. R.J. Bernal, who lost the first game against Pecos, took the loss on Tuesday as well, so the Eagles figure to see Esteban Lara on the mound tonight.

For the softball team, coach Tammy Walls said today’s game with Kermit, rescheduled from April 8, “keeps us from having to find a practice game,” after Pecos clinched third on Tuesday with their win over Fort Stockton.

They defeated Kermit in their first district game by a 10-0 score. Walls was able to get most of her players into that game by the later innings, and she said, “I’ll probably try to play as many as I can on Friday.”

Today will be the final home game for seniors Stephanie Herrera, Bre’Ann Windham and Brittany Lobstein. They’ll face Lubbock Cooper next Thursday at 7 p.m. in Andrews, and Walls said the winner will take on Muleshoe in the area round of the playoffs.

Pecos earns three medals in area meets

Pecos Eagle track team members picked up a trio of medals on Thursday against competitors from Class A through 5A at a pair of regional qualifier meets, in Roscoe and Lubbock.

Pecos’ boys went to Texas Tech for their qualifiers meet, and Rashad Terry took first in the 200 meter dash and placed second in the 100. Over at Roscoe, 200 meter runner Jummy Akinyode finished second in her race, which was open to qualifiers for next week’s regional track meets.

“Rashad ran a 21.41 in the 200,” said Eagles’ coach Jerry Parent. “In the 100 he came out of the block and on his fourth step slipped. He was in eighth place and got back to second. The only kid who beat him was the one from Estacado (Tony Glynn).”

Parent added that Terry went out at 6-feet earlier in the day in the high jump. “That’s what he normally does. We haven’t worked on the high jump a lot, but we’ll work on it Monday.”

Parent added that Alex Orosco ran his best time of the year in the 400 meter dash, going 52.1, while John Parent placed eighth in the discus with a 145-foot-10 throw. Chad Evans failed to place in the shot put, throwing 46-foot-10. “He was a little off,” the Eagles’ coach said.

“It was a good, relaxing pace, we ran it like a workout,” Parent added.

Over in Roscoe, Akinyode ran a 26.3 in the 200 meter dash to earn second. “We were kind of hoping Jummy would run against (Snyder’s) October Wells. She went to state last year, but she was injured and didn’t run,” said Eagles’ coach Roxie Chavez.

Three other Eagles competed in the Roscoe meet. Stephanie Herrera placed fourth in the both the shot put and discus, with throws of 122-foot-10 and 37-foot-9, while Jennifer Martinez finished sixth in the 1600 meter run and Alessandra Carrasco was 10th in the 800 meters.

“Jennifer did well. She cut about five seconds in the mile and ran a 5:44,” Chavez said. “Ballinger and Seminole both had girls there and she finished ahead of those girls.” She said Martinez placed behind two Alpine runners and a girl from another smaller school. Martinez also qualified for regionals in the 3200 meter run, but did not compete in that race.

Chavez said Herrera also placed in front of her Class 3A competitors in the discus, while finishing behind one competitor from Sweetwater in the shot put, who’ll be at next weekend’s Region I-3A meet in Odessa.

“There was lots of competition. It made the girls work really hard,” Chavez said.

Graham falls in I-3A tennis semis

Pecos Eagles’ senior Trent Graham failed in his bid for a berth in the Class 3A State Tennis Tournament on Thursday, falling on the second day of the Region I-3A Tournament at Odessa College.

Graham, who swept to a pair of easy victories on Wednesday, won the opening game of his semifinal match against William Matthews of Abilene Wylie, 6-3, but then saw Matthews come back to take the next two sets by 6-2, 6-1 scores.

“He just played a guy that was on,” said Eagles’ coach Mike Ortiz. “I saw him play before and after, and he didn’t play as well as he did against Trent.”

Matthews would lose in the finals to Clyde’s Luke Hawk, 6-2, 6-1, but won a playback for second over Snyder’s Tanner Reed, 6-3, 6-3. That came after Graham lost to Reed in the third place match, 6-1, 6-3.

Graham went in to the tournament as the No. 2 seed in boys singles after winning the District 4-3A singles title. Natalia Ornelas, who won the district singles title on the girls’ side, lost in the second round on Wednesday to eventual runner-up Marissa Briggs of Abilene Wylie, while Imari Ornelas and Whitney Lamb, who placed second at district, lost in the opening round to Canyon’s Becky Peeples and Ashley Shephard, who also ended up second in the tournament.

“Natalia also ran into a buzzsaw. She (Briggs) was pounding the ball, and it was just tough to handle,” Ortiz said. “Trent and Natalia both had the opportunity, but it just didn’t happen. But I’m still proud of them.

“I’m going to spend the rest of the year trying to get them scholarships, because they both want to play tennis in college,” the Eagles’ coach added.

The only other District 4-3A players to reach Thursday’s semifinals, Fort Stockton’s Vishal Chopra and Bryan Rainwater, also lost both their matches on the day and ended up fourth in the tournament.
