Golfers stay in second, lose ground to Loboes

The Pecos Eagles girls golf team is still in line for its sixth straight trip to regional tournament play, following the second round of their three-round District 4-3A Tournament in Monahans on Tuesday. But Eagles’ coach Tina Doan was not happy with how her team did over the middle 18 holes of play at the Ward County Golf Course.

“My girls just weren’t ready to play. Their minds just weren’t in it,” said Doan, after her team finished with a 355 on Tuesday. Pecos still added 32 strokes to their lead over Fort Stockton in the battle for the final regional tournament berth, and now holds an 81-stroke lead over the Prowlers. But after trailing Monahans by just five strokes following the opening round of the tournament in Kermit last week, the Eagles lost 28 shots to the Loboes on their home course.

Monahans shot a 327 and is at 653 through 36 holes, while Pecos is now at 686 going into the final round next week at Fort Stockton.

“Thirty strokes is almost impossible to catch up. Monahans is playing well right now; they’d have to totally blow up and we’d have to be on out ‘A’ game to have a chance,” Doan said.

Sophomore Shelly Martinez and freshman Eleanor Mason were the only Pecos golfers to break 90 on Tuesday. Martinez shot an 84 and is at 137 after two round, while Mason had an 89 and is at 183 overall.

For the other Pecos golfers, Sarah McKinney shot a 90 and is at 170 after 36 holes, Jennie Canon shot a 92 and is at 180 and Bianca Mendoza shot a 95 and is at 185 for the tournament.

“Shelly had a fairly decent round. She had a few bad shots, but she still leads the medalist race by one stroke,” Doan said. “But my juniors and seniors didn’t come to play. I don’t know where their mind were at, but they didn’t come to beat the Monahans girls.”

“I’m proud of Eleanor Mason. She set a goal of breaking 90 and she shot an 89. But if the other girls want to go farther than regionals, they’re going to have to go out and work a lot harder,” she added.

Doan said one of her ‘B’ team golfers was sick on Tuesday and as a result, the Eagles were unable to post a team score. For the others, Stephanie Galindo shot a 94 and is at 193 for the tournament, Melissa Mendoza shot a 111 and is at 227 and Evelyn Flores had a 115 and is at 239.

Monahans’ Allison Jordan with an 83-158, is one stroke behind Martinez in the medalist race, while teammate Amanda Stueessy had the low round on Tuesday, a 78, and is in third place, with a 159 score. Fort Stockton, with a 387-767, Monahans ‘B’, with a 441-865, and Kermit, with a 432-888, were the only other team scores in the tournament, which closes out on April 14.

Pecos’ boys also finish up their district tournament on April 14. Pecos is currently tied for first place with Fort Stockton after one round of their 54-hole tournament, with Round 2 scheduled for Thursday at Hogan Park in Midland.

Pecos’ bats silenced again in 3-0 Monahans win

Even with a different pitcher and a different site, the results of the Pecos Eagles’ second District 4-3A game against the Monahans Loboes was almost the exact same as their first meeting last month.

Monahans’ pitcher Raquel Hawkins tossed a three hitter, and the Loboes took advantage of a Pecos error to score once in the first inning, then scored twice more in the third off Kadye Hill’s double to beat the Eagles for the second time this season by a 3-0 final score.

Hawkins gave up a bloop single to Brittany Lobstein to lead off the bottom of the first inning, then didn’t surrender another hit until Jessica Florez’s two-out single in the fifth. Amalie Herrera led off the seventh inning with a bunt single, but Hawkins then retired the next three batters in order to earn the win.

The Eagles had a couple of solid shots right at Monahans players in the late innings, but in the early going made little contact against Hawkins, who struck out nine batters overall, all between Lobstein’s leadoff hit and Florez’s fifth inning single.

“We played well at time. We just didn’t get our bats going soon enough,” said Eagles’ coach Tammy Walls. “We played well overall, just not well enough to win.”

“Defensively I thought we played our best game all year. Savannah (Ewing) played outstanding at third base,” Walls said. Ewing robbed Hawkins of hits twice, on a sharp grounder to third base in the fourth inning and a line drive in the seventh, and threw out Emily Speed trying to score twice, on a Lupe Navarette grounder in the first inning and on an attempted steal of home in the seventh.

Hawkins opened the game by taking Stephanie Herrera’s first pitch up the middle for a single. One out later shortstop Amalie Herrera booted Emily Speed’s grounder, and Hawkins then beat Lobstein’s throw to third on Nicole Dickson’s tap out in front of home plate. That loaded the bases and Herrera then walked Stacie Fuentes to force home a run. Herrera survived a leadoff single in the second inning, but with one out in the third she hit Dickson, and then Fuentez beat out an infield hit on a pop up that dropped in front of second baseman Kelsey Flores. Hill was up next, and she lined a double over the head of Jenny Palomino in left field to score both runners.

Monahans would get just one more hit in the game, when Speed singled in the seventh before being caught at home on a double-steal attempt after a walk to Dickson, while Pecos’ only other baserunner besides their three singles was when Lobstein reached on Heather Schuler’s throwing error with two outs in the third. But she was then thrown out trying to go to second base on the play, retiring the side.

Hawkins’ three-hitter comes after Dickson three-hit Pecos last month in Monahans, and the win gave the Loboes a two-game lead over the Eagles in the District 4-3A standings. Pecos is 4-3 in district, while Monahans improved to 6-1 and all but clinched another trip to the playoffs.

The Eagles were scheduled to face Kermit on Thursday, but Walls said that game has been moved back two weeks to April 23. The Eagles’ next game will be next Tuesday, in Midland against first-place Greenwood, which won at Presidio on Tuesday, 11-0.

Eagles down Rangers after early problems

By JON FULBRIGHT

Josh Anchondo had more problems with his own ‘hits’ than he did with those of the Greenwood Rangers Tuesday night. But the Pecos Eagles’ pitcher was able to solve his problems after the early innings, while his teammates helped the Eagles rally to remain undefeated in District 4-3A play.

For the third time in as many home starts in district, Anchondo fell behind early by a 2-0 score. This time, it was Greenwood leadoff batters in the first and third innings that were hit by pitches who ended up scoring, as Pecos slipped back a little into their sloppy pre-district play. But for the fourth time in four district games, the Eagles were able to come from behind to win, as they scored three times in the bottom of the third inning and three more in the fourth and fifth innings to back Anchondo’s two-hit performance in a 6-2 victory.

“Josh struggled a little bit at time when we want him to come inside,” said Eagles’ coach Elias Payan. “We’ll have to work on that, but overall I couldn’t ask for a better game from Josh.”

Anchondo didn’t walk a batter and allowed hits only to the second and the next-to-last hitters of the game for Greenwood. Brian Hill singled too right field after the Eagles’ pitcher plunked leadoff hitter David Hill in the helmet to start off the game. But after a fielder’s choice grounder by Adam Banda and a Justin Crockett fly out left runners on first and third with two outs, the Eagles gave up a run, as catcher Jaime Muela’s throw went past shortstop Jose Reyes on a cutoff as Banda stole second, allowing Hill to score. Greenwood got another run in the third without benefit of a hit. This time, Brandon Smith was hit by a pitch, went to third when first baseman Robert Nunez missed a pickoff throw from Anchondo and scored on a passed ball by Muela.

Meanwhile, Greenwood coach Joe Williams’ decision to start Brian Hill on the mound appeared to be paying off for the first couple of innings. He allowed singles in each of the first two innings, but was able to strand runners on base both times.

“I was expecting Banda, but I guess he figured playing in Pecos he would save Banda for Monahans (Thursday in Midland) and take his chances here,” said Payan. “But I think we would have done all right whoever pitched. The kids are playing with confidence, something we weren’t playing with earlier in the year.”

The Eagles began their comeback the same way they did in last Friday’s 2-1 win over Fort Stockton, with a leadoff infield hit by Muela, who was then driven home by Victor Reyes. This time, it was an RBI single after Muela stole second, and Reyes would move up on the throw home before he scored on Jose Reyes’ double down the line in left field. Then with two outs, Reyes would score the go-ahead run when Isaiah Rayos’ bouncer up the middle, shortstop Smith, and the second base bag all came together at the same time. The result was a bad-hop single and a 3-2 Pecos lead.

While the Eagles’ defense got better as the game went on, Greenwood’s defense headed in the other direction. They gave Pecos a gift run in the fourth inning on errors by both Hills. Brian Hill had the first one, hitting Jonathan Garcia in the back with a throw on a slow roller down the first base line. Garcia eventually ended up on third, when he was prepared to score on Muela’s fly to centerfield. David Hill made sure he’s score by dropping the ball for another error.

The Eagles would get another unearned run in the fifth, on an error by Logan Bawcom at third base on a Garcia grounder. By then, the Hills had swapped positions after Pecos widened the lead too 5-2. The other run came on an infield hit by Jose Reyes, a walk to Anchondo and back-to-back hits by Rayos and Edward Valencia.

Given a four-run lead, Anchondo didn’t let Greenwood get a comeback going. The Rangers had rallied from six runs down with two outs at Fort Stockton for a 21-11 extra inning win to open district, but managed just one baserunner in the final three innings - a one out hit in the seventh by Eric Brunel, who was erased when Bawcom hit into a game-ending double play. Just before that, Valencia snared a hard-hit grounder by A.J.

McCullough for an out, as the Eagles played errorless ball over the final four innings. “We’re playing good ball now. We’re not struggling when we mess up,” said Payan, whose team now faces a trip to Presidio too face the pre-district favorite Blue Devils on Thursday. The win improved Pecos to 4-0 in district after a 3-12 start to the season, while
