Eagle boys tied for first after 4-3A golf opener

By JON FULBRIGHT
Staff Writer

Starting off the District 4-3A golf tournament on their home course, the Pecos Eagles shot their best round of the year Monday, on the opening 18 holes of the 54-hole district tournament.

However, the Eagles’ 299 total was only good enough to earn them a two-way tie for first place with the Fort Stockton Panthers, eight shots ahead of defending 4-3A champion and pre-district favorite Monahans.

“I’m happy as a lark,” said Eagles’ coach Kim Anderson, whose team is also 14 shots ahead of fourth place Greenwood (313), and 15 in front of fifth place Kermit (314). “A 14-15 shot lead, that’s good, but Stockton, that scares me. They had some pretty consistent scores.”

All five of the Panthers’ golfers shot 77 or better on the Reeves County Golf Course. Meanwhile, the Eagles had the top two golfers in the medalist race, as Michael Nichols shot a 69, while Pete Vasquez fired a 71 on Monday. Sal Nichols was tied for sixth in the medalist race with a round of 75, while Zack Morton shot an 84 and Jake Weinacht had a 98 for the Eagles’ other ‘A’ team scores.

Michael Nichols’ 69 total came despite some problems, including two bogeys and a double-bogey on the day. “It could have been a 65 if he had made a couple of shots he normally makes,” Anderson said.

Monahans’ 307 included a round of 72 from Braxton Brin, good enough for third place in the medalist standings. But the Loboes’ next-best score came from their ‘B’ team, as Victor Galzando tied Sal Nichols and three other golfers for sixth in the medalist standings with a 75.

Two of those golfers were from Fort Stockton - Brian Stephens and James George, while Nunnie Rodriguez shot a 73 to tie Kermit’s Matthew Creager for fourth in the medalist race.

The Panthers will get to be the home team for the final round of the district tournament. In-between, the teams will play Round 2 on April 8 at Hogan Park in Midland, where the teams faced each other 10 days ago. Monahans finished first among district teams that day with a 315 total, while Pecos was second with a 318. The top two teams after the final round of the tournament will advance to the Region I-3A Tournament in Midland on April 19-20.

Meanwhile, Pecos’ girls opened their 54-hole tournament this morning at the Winkler County Golf Course in Kermit. The Eagles are the defending district and regional champs and placed second to Snyder at state last May, but will be pressed by Monahans to defend their 4-3A title this season.

The girls will also play the second round of their tournament in Midland, with the final round of the tournament will be held in Monahans.

Netters get one title, 2nd overall in Pecos tourney

The Pecos Eagles’ tennis team came away with one division title, two second place finishes and a tie for second overall in their own varsity tournament on Friday, at the Pecos High School tennis courts.

The tournament was rescheduled from February due to snow, and as a result, only featured four teams - Pecos, district rivals Monahans and Fort Stockton and Wink. Fort Stockton ended up taking first place in the tournament with 20 points, while Pecos and Monahans tied for second with 18 points apiece.

Senor Trent Graham took first place in boys’ singles for the second week in a row, losing only one game along the way. Graham, who had a first round bye, defeated Fort Stockton’s Daniel Hernandez, 6-0, 6-1, then blanked Fort Stockton’s Brian Fierro, 6-0, 6-0 in the finals.

The other three Eagles in the boys’ singles bracket lost their opening matches, but Donald Walker did come back to win the consolation finals. Walker lost to Monahans’ Woody Vidona, 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 6-1, then defeated Wink’s David Fosdick, 8-1, and Monahans’ Jacob Kesey, 8-6. Kesey earlier had beaten Pecos’ Michael Orona, 8-2.

In girls’ singles, Natalia Ornelas, who had defeated Monahans’ Christy Gatzki on her home court last weekend in the Monahans’ Sandhills Tournament finals, lost on her own court to Gatzki this time, 5-7, 7-6, (7-2), 6-4. Earlier, Ornelas defeated Fort Stockton’s Casee McKenzie in the semifinals, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3), and Monahans’ Tiffany Bean, 6-1, 6-2. Gatzki earlier had defeated Pecos’ Amber Pando, 6-0, 6-0. The Eagles’ other singles player, Crystal Ikeler, lost her opener to Monahans’ Irene Blocker, 6-4, 6-2, then defeated Pando and Bean to take the consolation title.

In girls’ doubles, Mimi Ornelas and Whitney Lamb finished second to Monahans’ Laura and Wanda Ramirez, falling 6-0, 6-4, in the finals. They defeated Irene Casas and Victoria Burgess in their opening match, 6-1, 6-1, then beat the Loboes’ Cheyenne Smith and Jennifer Rodriguez in the semifinals, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

Pecos’ other doubles team, of Sara Natividad and Catherine Garcia, won their opener over Fort Stockton’s Kayla Golliher and Carey Ripley, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4, then lost to Ramirez and Ramirez in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-1, and to Smith and Rodriguez in the third place match, 6-4, 6-4.

The boys only had one doubles team, of Jerris Rayos and Curtis James, who lost to Simon Leyva and Steven Martinez of Monahans in their only match.
