Eagles face Cubs to start Midland tournament play
The warm weather of early this week gave way to cloudy skies and drizzle this morning, but as of mid-morning the Pecos Eagles were still scheduled to start of the West Texas March Classic Tournament in Midland this afternoon with a game against the Brownfield Cubs.
The Eagles and Cubs are scheduled to play starting about 3:15 p.m. at Christensen Stadium. Coach Elias Payan said if they win, they’ll play a 1:30 p.m. game on Friday against either Seminole or Monahans while the losers of the Pecos-Brownfield and Monahans-Seminole games will meet at 1 p.m. on Friday at the Midland High School field, next to Memorial Stadium.
The weather was much better on Monday when the Eagles went to San Angelo and played their best game of the season, beating the Lake View Chiefs by a 7-2 score behind Josh Anchondo’s three-hit pitching effort. Oscar Parada and Jose Reyes had three hits apiece for the Eagles, with Reyes collecting two doubles and four RBI on the afternoon.
The win was the third in four games for Pecos following an 0-6 start. Anchondo has two of those victories, including the Eagles’ first victory of 2004, last Friday against Denver City.
For this afternoon, Payan said sophomore Edward Valencia will be making his second start of the season. Valencia has been bothered by arm problems early, but also pitched in relief twice so far this season, against Snyder and Monahans.
