Fort Stockton, Monahans get Jr. Relay titles
Pecos' junior high track teams picked up a number of medals on Friday, while Monahans and Fort Stockton came away with the division titles at the season-opening West of the Pecos Junior Relays, at Eagle Stadium.
Pecos placed second in the seventh grade boys division with 143 points, while Monahans won with 317 points. In the eighth grade boys division, Fort Stockton edged Monahans by a 197-194 score, with Pecos third with 60 points.
Monahans won the seventh grade girls division with 268 points, while Fort Stockton was second with 88 points and the Eagles tied Fort Davis for third, with 83 points. The Loboes also took first in the eighth grade girls division with 230 points, while Fort Stockton edged Pecos for second by a 123-116 margin.
Joseph Rodriguez and Jeremy Martinez picked up first place finishes for the seventh grade boys. Rodriguez won the pole vault, clearing 6-foot-7, while Martinez took the 400-meter dash with a 1:03.17 time.
Rodriguez also took second in the 300 meter hurdles, with a 56.11 time, while Kevin Herrera was third. Lucas Chavez took second in the 100 meter dash with a 13.30 time, and Dominic Martinez was third, in 13.42, while Ariel Jimenez was second in the 800 meter run in 2:42.80. Chavez also tied for second in the long jump with a 15-foot-7 effort, and Martinez was third in the high jump, clearing 4-foot-8.
In the relays, the seventh grade boys got second in the 400 meter relay with a 52.61 time, second in the 800 meters with a 2:05.45 time, and second in the 1600 meters, with a time of 4:48.45.
In the eighth grade, the boys' best finish came from Dustin Windham, who won the pole vault, and the 400 meter relay team, which finished second with a 49.67 time, just behind Fort Stockton. The 800 meter relay team took third, with a 1:49.02 time, while the next-best finishes were fourths by Geno Leos in the 1600 meter run and Matthew Florez in the 100 meter dash. Drake Bradley also took second in the discus for the eighth graders.
The seventh grade girls' best results were in the 100-meter dash, where Brittany Palomino placed second with a 14.04 time, and in the long jump, where she also took home second. The other medals for the girls came from thirds by Destiny Medina in the 200 meters, with a 31.08 time; Angie Millan, third in the 2400 meters, with an 11:36 time, the 400 meter relay, which was second in 59.12; the 1600 meter relay, second with a 5:25 time, and the 800 meter relay, third with a 2:10 time.
In the eighth grade division, Heather Lamka placed first in both the 800 meter run, with a 2:54 time, and in the 2400 meters, with a 10:34 time, while her sister Kathryn was second with a time of 10:35 in that race. Shetavya Hightower also picked up a first place medal, winning the 100-meter dash in 14:01, and was third in the 100-meter hurdles, with a 20:05 time.
Other medals came from Diana Parada, third in the triple jump with a 27-foot-5 effort and in the long jump, with a 12-foot-10 leap, and Sada Orona, second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 31:04. The 400-meter relay team was third with a 57:28 time, as was the 800-meter relay team, with a 2:41 effort, and the 1600-meter team, with a time of 5:09.
Girls get 5th in Midland tournament
After starting slow and finishing fast in their first tournament of the season a week ago, the Pecos Eagles started fast and finished slow this past weekend at the West Texas Classic Softball Tournament in Midland.
The Eagles, who lost on a tie-breaker in extra innings on Thursday to Midland High, ranked No. 2 in the state in Class 5A going into the tournament, came back to rout Snyder and El Paso Americas on Friday, by 8-1 and 9-0 scores.
Then on Saturday they put up 14 runs on district rival Fort Stockton, but all that came late in the game, as they had to rally from a big early deficit to beat the Prowlers, 14-7. After that, the Eagles weren't able to pull off any comebacks against Merkel or Coahoma, as the lost to the Badgers and Bulldogs, by 8-0 and 7-2 final scores.
"We just looked like we were worn down by the end," said Eagles' coach Tammy Walls, whose team still managed to place fifth overall in the tournament's final point standings. "It was cold and the wind was blowing very hard into right field and we had a hard time playing the ball."
"I was pleased with the way we played against Midland High, and we came back on Friday and played Snyder and El Paso Americas very well. But I knew the kids would be kind of tired on Saturday, and by the end we were pretty much drained," Walls said.
She said Fort Stockton jumped out to a 6-0 lead before the Eagles scored eight times in the fifth inning, once in the sixth and five more times in the seventh inning for the victory. Brittany Lobstein, Hillary Hinojos and Bre'Ann Windham had two hits apiece against the Prowlers, while Stephanie Herrera had two hits, along with picking up the win on the mound.
Herrera pitched the first five games of the tournament for Pecos, while Hinojos pitched the final game against Coahoma, the top-ranked Class 2A team in the state. Walls said Savannah Ewing drove in both runs against the Bulldogs, while against Merkel, "We got seven hits, but we left seven on base. We didn't do the things we were doing against Midland High and Snyder in those games on Saturday."
Pecos had 12 hits in their win over the Tigers, the team the Eagles had been scheduled to face last Tuesday in Midland, but were snowed out. Walls said Cassandra Terrazas had a pair of hits in the victory over the Tigers.
Midland High would follow up their victory over Pecos with an extra-inning win over Monahans, 1-0, but were later shut out by Big Spring and Weatherford on Saturday. As a result, the Eagles wound up fifth overall in the tournament's cumulative point standings with 39 points, one behind third place Monahans and Odessa High, though Walls said Pecos had a chance to end up third before their Saturday afternoon losses to Merkel and Coahoma.
Big Spring went undefeated during the tournament, including a comeback victory over the Loboes, and finished with 56 points, while Midland Lee was second with 50 points. Merkel and Midland High trailed Pecos, with 38 and 35 points.
The Eagles are now 6-7 on the season going into their game on Tuesday evening, against the Seminole Maidens in Seminole. It's the first of a home-and-home match-up with the Maidens, who'll be in Pecos on Friday, along with the Kermit Yellowjackets. The Eagles then start the District 4-3A portion of their schedule on March 9, with a home game against Presidio.
PHS golf teams place 3rd, 10th in tournaments
The Pecos Eagle golf teams were a little shorthanded over the weekend, but the effects were tougher on the boys than on the girls during tournament competition in Midland and Fort Stockton.
Playing without a couple of their regular golfers due to grades, the boys wound up in 10th place in Division III of the Tall City Invitational in Midland, shooting a 352-343-695 score. The girls, playing in Fort Stockton, were minus one golfer for one day of the tournament, but still managed to end up in third place in the overall team standings, with a 365-372-737 total for the 36-hole tournament.
"The first day we only played with four girls because Jennie Canon was gone to a stock show, but little Evelyn (Mason) came through and shot in the 90s, so that helped us out," said Eagles' coach Tina Doan. "The second day the wind was blowing real bad, and the balls were getting blown off the greens, so all the scores were higher."
Andrews easily won the tournament with a 685 total, while El Paso Franklin was able to cut their opening day score of 373 by 10 strokes, and beat out Pecos for second place by one shot. Monahans was four strokes behind the Eagles in fourth place, shooting two strokes higher than Pecos on both days of the tournament.
"They weren't really worried about Franklin, they were worried about Andrews and Monahans in their group, but that stuff happens," Doan said. "We've just got to keep after it, because Monahans and us are going to be nip and tuck."
Individually, Shelly Martinez shot 84s both days, which was good enough to earn her runner-up medallist honors behind Andrews' Hali Richards. Mason shot a 96 on Friday and a 111 on Saturday for a 207 total, while Canon shot a 95 on Saturday. Sarah McKinney shot a 92-95-187, and Bianca Mendoza shot a 93-98-191 for the Eagles' other scores.
The Eagles also had a 'B' team in the tournament, which finished ninth with a 447-475-922 total. Evelyn Flores shot a 102-109-211, Stephanie Galindo shot a 98-121-219, Melissa Mendoza shot a 116-124-240 and Liza Vejil shot a 131-121-252.
The boys were minus two of their golfers for the Midland tournament, and ended up 54 strokes behind Monahans, which won the division with a 641 score, and 34 strokes in back of third place Fort Stockton. In district, the Eagles will have to beat one of those two teams out to earn their sixth straight trip to regionals.
"We've got to catch Stockton," said coach Kim Anderson. "We've got to put some scores together and get some confidence up. Since we get Pecos in the first round of district, we'll have to jump all over them fast, because the final round will be on their home course."
The Eagles' three regular 'A' team golfers, Michael Nichols, Pete Vasquez and Sal Nichols, all shot 83s on Saturday at the Nuevo Vista golf course, the site of this year's Region I-3A Tournament. Sal Nichols shot an 80 on Friday at the Midland Country Club for a 163 total, while Vasquez shot an 85 and finished at 168 and Michael Nichols had an 86 and finished with a 169.
The other two golfers also cut their scores on Saturday, despite the high winds. Zack Morton shot a 101-94-195 and Andre Varela had a 126-110-236 for the two-day tournament.
Canyon shot a 652 to finish third in the tournament. Seminole (664), Snyder (668), Lubbock Trinity (673), Midland Lee 'C' (675), Abilene Wylie (678) and Perryton were the other teams to place ahead of Pecos, while the Eagles beat out district rival Greenwood, which shot a 723.
Anderson said he hoped to have all his regular golfers available by the time district starts, and would have them for the Eagles' next tournament, in San Angelo, during spring break.
