Eagle girls in Stockton, boys in Jal
The Pecos Eagles' road basketball games tonight will mark a first for
the Eagle girls and a final for the Eagle boys, as the girls travel
south to Fort Stockton while the boys go north to Jal, N.M.
The girls will be playing their first road game in District 4-3A
play tonight, when they take on the Prowlers at the Williams Center in
Fort Stockton. The varsity will play at 6 p.m., following the junior
varsity contest set for 4:30 p.m.
The boys will play their final pre-district game tonight in Jal
against the Panthers, beginning with the freshman game at 5:30 p.m. and
followed by the JV at 7 and the varsity at 8:30 p.m.
Both Eagle teams were home this past Friday, with different results.
The girls opened district play with a 67-33 loss to the Monahans
Loboes, while the boys edged Crane by a 56-52 final score.
The girls led Monahans early in Friday's game, but were unable to
handle the Loboes' press and fell behind by eight after one period and
were never able to get things going. Leslie Rodriguez had 13 points to
lead the Eagles, who are 3-13 on the season.
Fort Stockton beat one of the three teams the Eagles have defeated
this year, Presidio, in their district opener on Friday and are 10-9 on
the season. They were able to rally in their last home game from an
11-0 deficit to defeat Fabens, 62-50, thanks to their own 19-0 streak
in the second half.
"From what I understand they're not very big, but they're quick.
They're going to run up and down the floor," said Eagles' coach
Veronica Valenzuela. The Prowlers are led by guards Ruby Bernal and
Crystal Holguin and post Tammy Cash.
Pecos' boys are 7-11 on the year after their win over Crane, in a
game where the Eagles took a 15-point first half lead and then held off
the Cranes in the final minutes. Oscar Parada and Victor Reyes each
scored 16 points to lead Pecos.
Jal has been off for a week and has only played seven games so far
this season. The Panthers lost at home a week ago to Pecos' district
rival, Monahans, 74-59, a night after losing to Lovington, which routed
the Eagles at home in the teams' season opener. Ariel Lujan had 16
points to lead the Panthers.
"I've been watching the boxscores and they seem to be a good team,"
said Eagles' coach Joe Flores. "Anytime you play a team from New Mexico
it's going to be tough."
After tonight, the Eagles will have another tough game, against
third-ranked Greenwood in their district opener at home on Friday. The
girls will also host Greenwood on Friday.
