Calmer winds to greet Eagles in Ft. Stockton
Winds aren't supposed to be as big a problem for the Pecos Eagles' tennis and boys golf teams today, as they were for the Eagles' baseball team on Thursday, as both squads travel to Fort Stockton for two day tournaments. v
High winds and blowing dust forced Pecos to cancel their varsity and junior varsity baseball scrimmages against Odessa High and Crane on Thursday. Pecos' junior varsity girls golf team was also scheduled to play in Andrews on Thursday, but the results of that tournament were not available today.
The girls and boys varsity golf teams were frozen out of their tournament last weekend in Big Spring, as was the Eagles' tennis team, whose own tournament on Friday was postponed until March 26 due to freezing rain across West Texas. The varsity girls were scheduled to take this weekend off, while the boys will be going up against 25 other teams in the Fort Stockton Tournament.
Several Eagles had one good day out of two in Monahans two weeks ago, when Pecos placed fourth, 34 shots in back of the host Loboes, and just in back of second and third place Midland Trinity and Big Spring. All three of those teams are scheduled to be in Fort Stockton this weekend.
The field will be a little smaller for the Eagles' tennis team today and Saturday in Fort Stockton, as they compete in their final event before the Region I-3A Tournament in two weeks at Levelland.
The Eagles played for the first time this season with both their No. 1 seeds, seniors Trent Graham and Natalia Ornelas, in their last meet, and they ended up with the Eagles' only victories in a loss at Andrews. Last year, Graham placed second in singles and Ornelas was second in doubles the Fort Stockton Tournament.
Eagles to look at young players in Andrews

The Pecos Eagles' softball team will get a chance to see what their 2005 pitchers look like in 2004, as well as trying out a few freshmen in other key positions today, as the Eagles compete at the Andrews Softball Tournament.
Pecos opened play this morning with a 9 a.m. game against Midland Greenwood, in pool competition. The actually tournament starts at 12 noon with Pecos taking on El Paso Burges, but the Eagles could face Greenwood again at 5 p.m. in the second round of bracket play. They'll face either the winner or loser of the Rangerettes' game against the host Mustangs, depending on the outcome of their game against Burges.
Pecos split their 55-minute season opening games against Alpine and Crane this past Tuesday, shutting out the Bucks, 3-0 while losing to the Cranes, 3-2. Senior Stephanie Herrera, who figures to pitch most of the team's games this season, allowed just one hit in winning the opener, but she'll be one of three starters not in the lineup this weekend for the Eagles.
"Stephanie has a college interview, and Katie Lee is still at the stock show," said Eagles' coach Tammy Walls. Lee, who is scheduled to catch for Pecos this season, will be replaced by shortstop Brittany Lobstein, which will leave the Eagles with two new starters on that side of the infield, after third baseman Jessica Florez sprained her ankle in Tuesday's loss to Crane.
"Danielle Garcia practiced at third base yesterday (Wednesday) and did an outstanding job," Walls said. "At shortstop I'm looking at Jenny Palomino, and we're looking at another freshman, Bianca Baeza, when Hillary (Hinojos) is pitching."
Hinojos pitched and took the loss against Crane, though she settled down after allowing three first inning runs. Walls said the sophomore would probably start the morning game against Greenwood, though she also plans to use Herrera's sister, freshman Amalie Herrera, this weekend.
"She throws a little bit harder than Hillary does, but we'll just have to see how well she throws strikes," Walls said.
Aside from Greenwood, defending District 4-3A champion Monahans will also be in the tournament, along with both Class 5A schools from Lubbock and several other El Paso schools, including Class 5A El Paso Coronado. The final games of the tournament will be played on Saturday.
