Six Eagles earn spots on 4-3A baseball team

Pecos Eagles senior Jose Reyes was named Co-MVP for District 4-3A in baseball, and five other Eagles were also selected to the 2004 All-District baseball team by the district’s six coaches.

The team was chosen earlier this month and released following Presidio’s three-game playoff loss to Perryton in the area round of the Class 3A playoffs last weekend.

Reyes shared the Most Valuable Player honor with Presidio’s Armando Dominguez, while freshman Isaiah Rayos shared Newcomer of the Year honors with Greenwood’s David Hill in voting by the 4-3A coaches. Seniors Jaime Muela, Oscar Parada and Victor Reyes also were named to the first team squad, while sophomore Edward Valencia was a second team selection.

Jose Reyes played shortstop and pitched for Pecos this season, going 3-1 in district play and 3-4 overall in 2004, as the Eagles rebounded from a 3-13 district start to finish second in the 4-3A standings with an 8-2 record, before losing to Seminole in the bi-district round of the Class 3A playoffs. During district Reyes led the team in batting with a .417 average, including eight doubles and 11 RBI. He was a second-team selection the previous year to the team.

Reyes shared the lead in runs scored with 10 and in hits at 15 with Muela and Victor Reyes, who were first team selections at catcher and outfield. Muela moved to catcher this season after not playing in 2003 and batted .394 during district, while Victor Reyes was named to the team in his first full year as a starter and batted .384.

Parada spent most of his time in centerfield again this season and finished with a .286 average, with 10 hits and 10 runs scored. He was a first team selection for the second year in a row after earning second-team honors in 2002 as a sophomore in District 2-4A.

Reyes was one of two freshman starters for Pecos in 2004, and finished with a .310 batting average, with nine hits and five RBI while playing mostly at second base during the season. Valencia spent most of his time at third base, but also played shortstop and was named to the second team as a utility player. He batted .276 with eight hits and seven RBI during district play.

Eagles’ coach Elias Payan added that along with the six Pecos players selected, sophomore outfielder Eddie Vela received honorable mention to the 4-3A squad.

Presidio, which beat out Pecos for first behind Dominguez’ two home runs in the final game of the regular season, had the most players named to the team with nine, all but one underclassmen. Named to the first team were juniors Juan Aguilar and Alex Calderon as pitchers, Juan Aguilar at second base and Orlando Macias in the outfield; along with sophomore Hector Rodriguez at first base and freshman Isidro Rocha at catcher. Second team selections included the lone senior, Marcos Rodriguez, and freshman Yiberel Garcia in the outfield.

Aside from Hill, third place Greenwood put six other players on the team. Senior Adam Banda was named to the first team as a pitcher, along with junior catcher Toby Bunch, junior designated hitter A.J. McCullough and senior shortstop Brian Hill. Second team picks were sophomore Eric Bruno at second base and freshman Logan Bawcon at third base.

Monahans put senior pitcher Houston Stockman and senior third baseman Dimas Porras on the first team, while senior catcher Jesus Pedroza and junior second baseman Scotty Najar were second team picks. Fort Stockton had senior pitcher Estaban Lara on the first team and senior catcher R.J. Bernal, and freshman outfielder Billy Bradshaw on the second team. Kermit senior pitcher Lupe Munoz and junior outfielder Hunter Hardaway were the Yellowjackets’ first team picks, while senior Jaime Gallardo at first base, sophomore shortstop Rudy Castillo and senior DH Erbey Saucedo were the second team selections for Kermit.
