Pecos boys finish 2nd, girls 5th in junior golf

The Pecos Eagle boys’ and girls golf teams both cut their scores on Saturday, playing the final round of their five-week tournament at the Reeves County Golf Course.

Pecos’ boys, who moved into second place in the team standings the previous week in Kermit, widened their margin at home over Monahans and ended up shooting a 349 to place second overall with a 1412 score for their 90-hole tournament. Eighth grader Drake Bradley also had the low round of the day with a 77, and won the overall medalist honors for the tournament.

Pecos’ girls didn’t post an overall team score for the tournament due to a shortage of players two weeks ago in Andrews. But the girls had their best round of the tournament on Saturday, shooting a 211 to place fifth on their home course, while golfer Rica Pino finished in a tie for sixth in the final medalist standings.

Monahans had moved past Pecos into second place behind Andrews after the second round of the tournament, but coach Ronnie Daniel said the Eagles were able to regain the No. 2 spot in Kermit. “We beat them by 37 strokes last week, so we had a 22 stroke lead going in and then we beat them again on Saturday,” he said.

Pecos finished 19 strokes in front of Monahans and 13 behind first place Andrews. The Mustangs shot a 336 and won with a 1412 overall score, while the Loboes had a 368 and finished at 1579.

Bradley finished with a 411 score, eight shots up on Eric Kelton of Andrews, who shot a 419. Daniel said his son, Dane, and Heath Armstrong also earned medalist honors for this past Saturday, as both shot rounds of 88. Dane Daniel finished at 482 for the tournament, seventh overall, while Armstrong missed two rounds of play and didn’t have a combined tournament score.

Everett Parker shot a 96 and Nathan Duke shot a 97 for the Eagles’ other scores. Duke ended up with a 90-hole total of 531, while Parker didn’t have an overall score, but Ronnie Daniel said he placed in the Top 10 the previous week in Kermit.

Pecos also had a ‘B’ and ‘C’ team playing at home on Saturday. The ‘B’ team shot a 403 and were eighth, while the ‘C’ team was 10th with a 496 score.

Joseph Ontiveros shot a 94 to lead the ‘B’ team. He was followed by Josh Elliott at 104, Joseph Rodriguez at 105, Eric Salcido had a 108 and Paul Zubledia shot a 116. For the ‘C’ team, Ismael Mendoza had a 106, Desi Alvarez a 116, Frankie Morin had a 130 and John Blount shot a 144.

Andrews ‘B’ was in fourth place on Saturday with a 379 score and fourth overall at 1601 for the tournament. They were followed on Saturday by Fort Stockton with a 386-1726; Monahans ‘B’ with a 388-1716 and Kermit with a 389-1831. Fort Stockton ‘B’ shot a 449 and finished with a 2019 score.

Pino shot a round of 47 for the girls on Saturday, and overall finished tied for 12th place, with a 45-hole score of 289. Carolina Briones was the other Pecos golfer to play all five rounds of the tournament. She shot a 52 on Saturday and finished with a 316 score.

Amanda Herrera had the Eagles’ second-best score of the day, with a 51, while Pecos’ other golfer Kayla Natividad, shot a 61.

Andrews won the tournament on Saturday with a 179 score and shot a 971 to take the overall title, while Monahans shot a 193 and was second, with a 1052 score. Kermit was the other team to finish ahead of Pecos on Saturday, shooting a 205 for a 1154 total score. The other two teams playing on Saturday, Monahans ‘B’ and Andrews ‘B’ shot 227 and 258 and finished with 1182 and 1206 scores.
