Summer learn-to-swim class holds registration
Registration for the Pecos-Barstow-Toyah summer learn-to-swim classes is scheduled for next Monday and next Wednesday, May 17 and 19, at the Pecos High School pool.
Registration will run both days from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., with a cost of $25 per child. The classes will be divided into two sessions, May 31 through June 11 and June 14-25.
Classes will be divided into 3-year-olds, who will go from 8:50 to 9:20 a.m. Mondays through Fridays; 4-year-olds from 9:30 to 10:10 a.m. or 10:15-10:55 a.m.; Level 1, 2 and 3 students, from 9:30-10:10, 10:15-10:55 or 11 to 11:40 a.m.; Level 4 from 9:30 to 10:10 a.m. or 10:15-10:55 a.m.; and Level 5 and Level 6 students, who will go from 8:45 to 9:25 a.m.

Eagles place 15 swimmers on Class 4A all-state team
A group of Pecos Eagle boys and girls swimmers earned Class 4A All-State honors again this year, after qualifying for this past February’s state meet in Austin.
A total of seven girls and eight boys were recognized, with six of the boys earning first team honors after the Eagles placed fourth in the final team standings, according to head coach Terri Morse. The six earned their spots by qualifying for the finals at the state meet in Austin. Six of the girls earned second team state honors by finishing in ninth through 14th place at state, while two girls and one boy received honorable mention for state.
On the boys’ side, senior Max Key was a first team selection in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle races, along with the 200 freestyle and 200 medley relays. He also was a second team selection in the 400 freestyle relay. Another senior, Will Oglesby, was a first team pick in two events, the 100-yard backstroke and the 200 medley relay, and was a second team selection in the 500 freestyle and the 400 freestyle relay. Sophomore Matt Elliot also earned first team honors in two events, the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays, and was a second team selection in the 100 yard butterfly.
Earning first team honors in one event each were seniors K.W. Winkles and Daniel Quintana and freshman Kyle Winkles. K.W. Winkles was named to the first team in the 200 medley relay and was a second team selection in the 100 yard breaststroke, the 200 medley and the 400 freestyle relay. Quintana was named in the 200 freestyle relay, as was Kyle Winkles. He also was a second team selection in the 400 freestyle relay and received honorable mention in the 100 yard backstroke.
In diving, senior Michael Juarez was a second team selection for all-state, while Guthrie Long received honorable mention in the 1-meter competition. Juarez also earned All-American honors in diving for the 2003-04 season.
On the girls’ side, junior Catherine Minjarez was a second team selection in two relays, the 200 medley and 200 freestyle, and her two individual events the 200 individual medley and 100 fly. Susan Moore was also a second team selection on both those relay events; Ashley Horsburgh was a second team pick on the 200 free relay and an honorable mention on the 400 free; Teddie Salcido was a second team pick on the 200 medley relay and honorable mention in the 500 freestyle and the 400 freestyle relay; Amie Reynolds was a second team pick on the 200 free relay and Lindsey Shaw earned second team honors in the 200 medley relay.
Two seniors, Betsy Lujan and Jessica Minjarez, received honorable mention in the 400 freestyle relay. In addition, Morse said Lujan, Oglesby, Quintana and K.W. Winkles earned Academic All-American honors .
