Pecos golfers finish fifth in Lubbock tourney
The Pecos Eagles boys' golf team placed fifth this past weekend in
their first tournament of the 2003-04 school year, the Red Raider
Classic in Lubbock, while junior Michael Nichols tied for first place
medallist honors in Division II
The Eagles shot a 642 score to finish one shot in back of Amarillo
Tascosa in Division II. Odessa Permian won that division with a 611
score, while Slaton was second at 629 and Midland Lee's 'B' team was
third with a 641 score. Lee's 'A' team took the Division I title with a
578 score to 594 for Duncanville.
Nichols shot 75s both days of the 36 hole tournament to tie
Permian's Will Kinnam for medallist honors with a 150 score. Senior
Pete Vasquez was next for the Eagles with an 81-79-160, and was
followed by senior Sal Nichols at 85-81-166 and freshman Joseph Tarin,
with an 84-82-166. Alex Morales, the Eagles' other golfer, shot a 185,
cutting his score from a 102 in the opening round to an 83 on Saturday.
"What really impressed me was my freshman, Joseph Tarin, played
really good," said Eagles' coach Kim Anderson. "I was looking for a
fourth man for the team, and I think I found him. For his first
tournament, he played really well.
"Mikey played well both days. He's in good shape. We just have to
work on Pete and Sal's games," said Anderson.
Slaton was the only non-5A school to place ahead of the Eagles. Most
of the other schools entered were Class 5As, including all three
Lubbock schools, Odessa High, Midland High and Abilene High.
Anderson said the Eagles have only two other tournaments on their
fall schedule, a junior varsity competition in October at Midland and a
varsity tournament in early November at Fort Bliss in El Paso.
Eagles button up Jackets in 4-3A opener

Once the Pecos Eagles got Amber Broadway off the front line, they
got control of their District 4-3A opening volleyball match on Tuesday
at the Pecos High School gym.
The Kermit Yellowjackets' 6-foot senior hitter was able to go over
Pecos' front line at the outset of Tuesday's match, and helped the
visiting Jackets go out to an 11-5 lead. But once Broadway made her
first trip to the back line the Eagles took control, rallying for a
25-22 win in Game 1, then winning the final two games of the match by
25-20 and 25-17 scores.
"She was the one doing all the damage," said Eagles' coach Becky
Granado. "That's the only place they were going to set. I tried to get
my girls to understand it didn't matter where the pass is, they're
going to try and set to Broadway."
Her success at the start - she had five kills during Kermit's
opening run - was more than offset later by the Eagles' success when
Broadway was off the front line, as Eagle seniors Leslie Rodriguez and
Stephanie Herrera took advantage of her absence to connect on series of
kills, while Danielle Garcia and Bre'Ann Windham also found openings on
the court during the three-game sweep.
"I was pleased with my hitters," Granado said. "Leslie, Stephanie,
Bre'Ann and Danielle seem to have started hitting the ball lately, and
my setters are starting to get more relaxed, and I think that helps.
We've had two games back-to-back with good hitting."
The Eagles cut the Jackets' lead to 15-13 by the time Broadway got
back up front, and while she did have a couple of spikes to keep Kermit
in the lead, Pecos finally would take a 21-20 lead on a spike by
Garcia, and would eventually win the opening game on a tip over the
front line by Rodriguez.
In Game 2, the Jackets would jump ahead, 4-1, before the Eagles came
back, taking the lead for good at 15-13 on a missed tip attempt by
Broadway. Spikes by Herrera and Windham followed, and the Eagles would
eventually go up by as many as seven points, at 23-16, before Kermit
cut the lead to four. But the Eagles then got their 24th point on a net
violation by Michaela Glander and won on a kill by Garcia.
Kermit would grab the early lead for the third straight game, on a
Glander block of Windham and a spike by Broadway, but this time, Pecos
would go ahead to stay soon after, at 5-4 on a back line hit over the
net by Windham that fell in-between a trio of Jacket players.
The Eagles, meanwhile, were getting to a lot of free balls by Game
3, while Rodriguez came up with a series of kills to help Pecos go out
to a 15-7 lead. Kermit would get only as close as five points the rest
of the way, before the Eagles finished things off on a spike by
Rodriguez and a couple of unforced errors by the Jackets.
"We've got some speed on defense. If we just give them a chance, a
lot of our girls are not afraid to hit the flood and go after the
ball," Granado said. "Our passing on free balls also was 10 times
better tonight. When the setters get better balls to set, our hitters
are more consistent on offense and everything just falls into place."
The win improved Pecos' season record to 9-13, while Kermit fell to
8-8 on the season with their loss. The Eagles will now take a long trip
south to Presidio on Saturday for their District 4-3A road opener
against the Blue Devils. Presidio came to Pecos this past Saturday for
a non-district contest against the Eagles, who pulled out a five-game
win in a match that lasted almost 21/2 hours.
Pecos also took Tuesday's freshman and junior varsity matches
against Kermit. The ninth graders defeated the Yellowjackets by 25-13,
25-17 scores, while the JV downed Kermit, 25-22, 25-20. Granado said
all three matches on Saturday against Presidio were scheduled to be
played back-to-back, with the starting times scheduled for 4, 5 and 6
p.m.
