Mendoza gets Silver Gloves second place

Pecos-Barstow Warbirds boxer Aaron Mendoza lost in the finals of the 106-pound division this past Sunday, fighting at the State Silver Gloves Tournament in McKinney.

Warbirds trainer Roy Juarez said Mendoza won his opening round match in the 13-14 year old age group over Ivan Zubieta of the West Texas (El Paso) team on Saturday afternoon, before falling in the finals to Antonio Cardenas of the South Texas team on Sunday.

"He did good. That guy had a longer reach, but the fight went all three rounds," Juarez said.

Juarez did say at the outset of Sunday's title fight Mendoza "was a little slow in the first round. He came out in the second round and did a little better, but he got tired on me.

"The same goes with the third round. He came out using body shots, and started wearing that guy out, but I guess it was a little too late, because they gave the fight to the other guy," Juarez said.

In the win over Zubieta, he said Mendoza also started off slowly. "The first round was close and the second round he lost. But he came out and beat him real good in the third round and won the decision."

Mendoza fought for the Permian Basin boxing team, which Juarez said placed second overall in the tournament.

"I'm looking forward to going to meet that guy again, hopefully in the Junior Olympics," Juarez said, referring to the late spring tournament. However, before then he said he's trying to get fights for three other boxers between now and the area Golden Gloves Tournament in February.

"I've got to wait now until the beginning of the year to get these other kids registered. Hopefully I can find them some fights too," he said of boxers Antonio and Jesse Martinez and Trisha Ramirez.

He said getting area fights for the boys will probably be easier for the boys than for Ramirez. "In March or April I'll try and get some fights for Trisha down towards San Antonio, because around here in West Texas there are no girls her age or weight."

Eagle hoop teams on road in Snyder, Alpine

The Pecos Eagles and Snyder Tigers will be going through role reversal from a year ago tonight, when the Eagle boys travel over to Snyder to face the Tigers in a pre-district basketball game.

Meanwhile, Pecos' girls will continue their seven week road trip to start off the 2003-04 season, as they try to break a five-game losing streak in Alpine tonight against the Bucks.

The Eagles and Tigers will be meeting for the second game in a row, while Pecos and Alpine will have their first meeting of the season tonight, with the junior varsity and varsity games at both sites scheduled for 6 and 7:30 p.m.

Pecos' boys got back to the .500 mark for the season and got third place in the Gym Bice Tournament in Andrews on Saturday with a 50-45 win over the Tigers. That reversed the result from a year ago, when Snyder defeated Pecos in the Andrews tournament.

Three days later, the Eagles avenged that loss with a home court victory over Snyder. Tonight, they'll be trying to keep the Tigers from doing the same thing on their court.

"It's going to be a real battle on Tuesday," said Eagles' coach Joe Flores, whose team won the game from the foul line in the second half on Saturday, after Snyder had taken a 22-18 halftime lead. The Eagles were 18-for-26 from the line in the game, most of that coming in the second half, while the Tigers hit just 11 of 24 shots from the foul line.

The win gave Pecos a 3-3 record on the season, with the Eagles alternating wins and losses in their first six games so far this year. Snyder opened the Andrews Tournament with a win over Fort Stockton, then lost to Fabens before their game with Pecos.

Pecos' girls, meanwhile, will be trying to improve on both offense and defense in their game tonight against the Bucks. The Eagles allowed over 40 points in the first half of their first two games last weekend at the Lamesa Tournament, and only scored 65 points combined in all three tournament games, as they fell to 1-5 on the season.

"I'm going to have to try something different on defense," said Eagles' coach Veronica Valenzuela. "I'm going to go to a 1-3-1 zone, because we're not getting out there with the 2-3 zone. We're letting them get off too many shots because we're not quick enough on the zone."

Alpine had this past weekend off, and come into the game with a 2-1 record. Both their victories have come over Presidio, which is also the only team the Eagles have beaten so far this season. The Bucks' win a week ago on the Blue Devils' home court was by a 73-32 final score, while their only loss of the season was against Crane.
