Pecos LL, JL All-Stars selected

All-Star teams for the Pecos Little League and Junior League were announced Sunday night, following the final games of the 2008 season at Chano Prieto Field.

The teams will begin play in District 37 competition on Friday, June 27. Unlike recent years, when Pecos has had five teams entered in area competition, only three will compete this time around, in the 9-10, 11-12 and 13-14 year old divisions.

The 9-10 year olds will open play in their tournament at Fort Stockton, and will be trying to defend their district title from a year ago. The team is made up of Nathan Martinez, Brandon Gonzales, John Christian Hernandez, Josiah Bechtel, Jose Angel Villegas, John Michael Rodriguez, Christopher Soto, Jason Martinez, Kristopher Quintana, J.J. Urias and Bubba Henson. Frankie Ramos is the manager for the team, while coaches are Arturo Quintana, Gilbert Martinez and Harvey Gonzales.

The 11-12 year olds also will be trying to defend last year’s district title, and will be playing their tournament this year in Monahans. Players named to the team are Ramon Matta, Rodrick Renteria, Pony Palomino, Cesar Ortega, Sammy Villegas, Alvaro Dominguez, Jay Hinojos, Andre Roman, Jeffrey Trujillo, Jared Windham, John Zuniga, Joey Varela, J.J. Lerma and Quinten Garcia. Ramon Matta will be the manager with Raul Palomino Sr. and Pablo Briones as coaches.

The 13-14 year old Junior League team will be made up of Joshua Hernandez, Brandon Garnto, C.J. Gomez Mark Quintana, Israel Espudo, Joe Arron Arenivas, Devante Jenkins, Jesus Salgado, Jared Rodriguez, Ben Dominguez, Jose Lujan Jr., Michael Carrasco and Justin Lopez. Junior League manager is Israel Campos, with Danny Soto, Vaughn Garnto and Rene Gomez as coaches.

The Junior League lost out in district play last year to Monahans and Fort Stockton. This year’s tournament will be held in Alpine. The two divisions where Pecos won’t be fielding teams this year are the 11-year-old Little League, and the 15-16 year-old Senior League tournament, where Pecos finished second to Laredo in the state finals a year ago.

Along with the All-Star picks, the Little League also announced its regular season and tournament winners, and the top finishers in the Home Run Derby held the previous weekend. The ‘Horns were the regular season winners in the ‘C’ division, while the Sooners won the tournament title, while the Rockhounds won both the regular season and tournament titles in the ‘B’ division and the Rockies did the same in the ‘A’ division. In the Junior League, the Rangers took first during the regular season, while the Rockies won the post-season tournament for the 13-14 year olds.

In the Home Run Derby, Jacob Zuniga placed first and Isaiah Ornelas second in the ‘C’ division. In the ‘B’ division, John Michael Rodriguez placed first and John Christian Hernandez second. The ‘A’ division winner was Jay Hinojos, with Alex Rodriguez second, and in the Junior League, Jesus Salgado was first, with Israel Espudo second.
