Balmorhea puts four girls, three boys
on All-District 9-A basketball squad
Four members of the Balmorhea Bears girls’ basketball team were named to the All-District 9-A basketball team, while three members of Balmorhea’s boys’ squad also received All-district recognition.
One player off each squad for the Bears was also selected to play in the Texas Six-Man Coaches Association All-Star basketball game this summer, and two other Balmorhea players were chosen as tournament alternates.
Balmorhea’s girls ended a three-year playoff drought this season, placing second in District 9-A and then defeating District 10-A champion Grandfalls before losing to Water Valley in the area round of the playoffs. The Bears placed senior guard Trina Jurado and junior post Lorissa Rodriguez on the first team squad, while post Amber Briceno and guard Savannah Matta were second team selections.
Jurado, who was the Bears’ top outside shooter this past season, was also named to the six-man All-Star squad, along with Fort Davis’ Jenny Cauble, who was selected as most Valuable Player for the district in 2004. Briceno was named as an alternate to the West All-Star team.
Dell City’s Shyra Dean was named Defensive MVP by the district’s coaches, while the rest of the first team was made up of Fort Davis’ Chelsey Boswell and Sandie Rodriguez and Kim French of Sierra Blanca. The other second team selections were Fort Davis’ Courtney Brewer, Sierra Blanca’s Lucia Snyder and Sandra Calderon of Valentine.
While this was an up year for the girls, it was a down season for Balmorhea’s boys, who missed the playoffs for the first time since the midd-1990s. Even with that, the Bears’ senior post, Keith Baeza, ended up sharing District 9-A MVP honors with Dell City junior Jose Garcia. Baeza was also chosen to the Six-Man All-Star Game, along with Fort Davis senior Frankie Cauble.
Also named to the first team squad was another senior for the Bears, guard Urban Baeza, while sophomore Brian Mendoza was chosen too the second team squad. Baeza was also picked as first alternate to the summer all-star contest. Two other Bears, junior Levon Barragan and sophomore Justin Machuca, were honorable mention picks for the team.
Cauble and another Fort Davis senior, John Liddell, were the Indians’ first team picks, while Dell City put two other juniors, Eloy Perez and Josh Archonde, on the first team squad. The rest of the second team was made up of seniors Trini Granado and Tim Salcido and junior Arthur Cauble of Fort Davis and junior Alex Jackson and senior Harvey Bustamante of Sierra Blanca.
Pecos girls travel to Kermit, boys close pre-district play
The Pecos Eagles will close out their pre-district baseball schedule tonight by starting a three-game home stand, as they face the Midland Christian Mustangs, while Pecos’ softball team ends a two game road trip this afternoon in Kermit, as they take on the Yellowjackets in their third District 4-3A game of the season.
The Eagles and Jackets will face each other at 5 p.m., with Pecos looking to stay within a game of first place Monahans and Greenwood, while the baseball game in Pecos will begin at 7 p.m., with both the Eagles and Mustangs looking to improve on their results from this past weekend.
The girls dropped to 1-1 in district this past Friday with a 3-0 loss at Monahans. The Loboes took advantage of Pecos mistakes in the first and fourth innings to score their runs, while Nicole Dickson shut out the Eagles on three hits.
“Overall we didn’t do badly on defense. Savanna Ewing did a good job playing at third base, and Cassandra Terrazas had a good catch in right field,” said Eagles’ coach Tammy Walls. “But Monahans is a good team and we just didn’t play good enough to win.”
The Eagles scrimmaged Kermit back in February and outscored the Jackets at that time, but haven’t face they since then in pre-district play. “We should be able to d OK, but you never know how things are going to go,” Walls said.
Pecos’ boys have dropped five straight games, allowing 11 or more runs each time, to fall to 3-11 on the season. That includes two losses to Greenwood and losses to Big Spring and Andrews this past weekend at the Andrews Tournament. Tonight, they’ll face a Midland Christian team that dropped a pair of 11-1 decisions over the weekend on the road, as they opened TAPS district place with losses in Dallas and Waco.
The Eagles will take on Kermit at home on Friday to begin their District 4-3A schedule, and coach Elias Payan said that after using six pitchers in this past weekend’s games, he wasn’t sure who would go on the mound against the Mustangs.
“Right now I’m trying to get my rotation set in the right sequence for district, so maybe Edward (Valencia) will go, if his arm’s not sore, maybe (Chris) Garnto, or we may just do it by committee,” he said.
“Right now I’m looking to Friday too have our rotation in order. I want to win this ballgame, but Friday, when district starts, is what’s important,” he added.
Kermit and Fort Stockton will start off the 4-3A season tonight, in a game moved up from April due to the Easter holiday. Monahans, Greenwood and Presidio will join the Eagles in beginning their district schedule on Friday.
