Eagles set Feb. 9 debut for new field

The Pecos Eagles' softball team will get their first chance to play on their new field three weeks from now, when the Eagles host three other teams in a pre-season scrimmage.

The Feb. 9 scrimmage against the Kermit Yellowjackets, Sweetwater Mustangs and Denver City Mustangs will mark the first time the new $298,000 facility on the west side of the Pecos High School campus has been used by the Eagles, who have played their games at Maxey Park and at Martinez Field on the south side of town over the first six seasons of varsity softball for Pecos.

The first official game for the Eagles on the new field will come eight days later, when they start off the 2004 season at home against the Alpine Bucks. It's one of eight home games on Pecos' schedule this year, as the Eagles look to return to the playoffs after a one-year absence.

Coach Tammy Walls' team won four district titles while a member of District 2-4A, but last season were beaten out for third place in District 4-3A by Fort Stockton in the final game of the regular season by a 3-2 score. Pecos ended up 5-5 in district play and 11-12 on the season.

The Eagles will close out their season again this year with the Prowlers, but will play in Pecos, and will also open 4-3A play at home, against the Presidio Blue Devils on March 16. Defending district champ Monahans, which is again favored in the 4-3A race this season, will be the opening road contest, on March 19, and the Eagles will play four of their first six district games away from home.

They'll also play in two out-of-town tournaments this year, at Andrews on Feb 19-21 and the following weekend in Midland. Walls has replaced a third tournament on last year's schedule with a pair of home-and-home games against Seminole and a non-district match-up with Kermit just before the start of 4-3A play.

With the exception of the opening scrimmage and their April 13 trip to Greenwood, all non-tournament games this season are scheduled for 5 p.m. starts.
