Turnover woes continue for Eagles at Stockton

The Pecos Eagles struggled through some of the same problems in their District 4-3A road opener Tuesday night in Fort Stockton as they did in their home opener in district last Friday. But the Eagles were able to stay with the Fort Stockton Prowlers until the final period, when Fort Stockton broke away for a 68-48 victory at the Williams Center.

"We had pretty much the same problems with turnovers and panicking on the press," said Valenzuela. "I thought when they started the press it was going to be the same thing as with Monahans. We made the same mistakes trying to pass over people and passing to someone with two people on them, but we were able to hang in with Fort Stockton."

Pecos trailed by only one point after the opening period, and were down 30-23 at halftime. The Prowlers upped that margin to 10 points, at 44-34, after three periods, and then doubled that margin in the final period.

Guard Ruby Bernal led all scorers with 19 points, while Tammy Cash added 16 in a foul-filled game that saw both teams combine for 54 fouls and 78 free throws in 32 minutes of play. Half of Pecos' points came from the foul line, with Leslie Rodriguez leading the Eagles with 14 points, including 8-for-10 from the line, while Adriana Armendariz was 6-for-8 from the line and finished with 12.

"Tammy Cash got a lot of baskets off rebound because we still don't want to block out," Valenzuela said. "We didn't get a lot of over-the-back calls, but we still didn't block her out like we should."

The loss left the Eagles with a 3-14 mark and an 0-2 record in district, while the Prowlers are 2-0 in district and 11-9 on the season. The Eagles will return home on Friday night to face Greenwood, which improved to 1-1 in district with a win over Presidio on Tuesday.

Pecos struggles with Jal in final pre-district game

With District 4-3A play scheduled to begin on Friday, and with the state's third-ranked team, Greenwood, up first for the Pecos Eagles, coach Joe Flores was hoping to get a good effort out of his team Tuesday night in Jal, in the final pre-district contest for Pecos.

Instead, he got "one of our worst games of the season," against the Panthers, as the host Panthers outscored Pecos 34-18 in the second half of a 59-38 win over the Eagles.

"We had 35 turnovers in the ballgame," Flores said. "If this wasn't our worst game of the year overall, than defensively it was. "We couldn't get anything going and we got no low post play whatsoever."

Hobbs' Matt Clint and Javier Comminez both hit 3-point shots on the way to scoring 14 and 11 points, but Flores said most of the Panthers' baskets came from inside.

"They got a lot of lay-ups. Our defensive presences was not there and we gave them a lot of uncontested lay-ups," he said. Tyler Briones benefited most from those problems, and finished with 12 points.

The Eagles didn't have a player in double figures on the night, and didn't have their leading scorer, Oscar Parada, for most of the game, Flores said. "Oscar fouled out early in the fourth quarter, and he hardly even played. He was in foul trouble as soon as the game started," said Flores, who also was unhappy with several of the fouls called on his senior forward.

Even without Parada, the Eagles trailed by just a 25-20 margin going into the third period, but were outscored in that quarter by a 14-5 margin. The Panthers, 3-5, added another seven points to their lead in the fourth period.

Justin Lara and Ricardo Morales both had eight points to lead the Eagles, who go into district with a 7-12 record.
