Pecos students make Dean's list

The Dean's List for the 2003 Fall Semester has been announced at Angelo State University in San Angelo.

To be eligible for the Dean's List, students must be enrolled full-time and maintain a 3.25 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

The honorees, along with their majors, include the following from the Pecos area: Sarah L. Armstrong, finance; Kalyn D. Lara, interdisciplinary child development and learning; and Orlando B. Matta, kinesiology/secondary certification.

Garcia named Employee of the Month

Joe Garcia has been selected as Employee of the Month for January at the Reeves County Detention Center.

He is assigned to the Education Department as an Education Specialist III.

Garcia has two children, Velinda and David. He graduated from Sul Ross State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Masters in Education in Administration.

He enjoys fishing and spending time with family and friends.

Garcia retired from the Monahans-Pyote-Wickett Independent School District, where he worked as assistant vice-principal and began his career with the Reeves County Detention Center on Nov. 18, 2002.

As an instructor, Garcia's primary responsibilities are to conduct and maintain an ESL course offered to all inmates and to provide a viable pertinent program to ensure opportunities for self-improvement.

He works with programs, planning, and teaching, but is also involved in the recruitment, counseling, and assistance of inmates to help them prepare for successful re-introduction into society, according to RCDC Warden Rudy Franco.

"Mr. Garcia performs his responsibilities and duties in the highest professional manner, and has always taken pride in being a staff member at the Reeves County Detention Center," said Franco.

"On behalf of the Reeves County Detention Center, I wish to express appreciation for his faithful and effective service and wish him future success in his career," he said.
