Eagle Swimmers tune up for district

By JON FULBRIGHT
Staff Writer

The Pecos Eagles' swimming team got back to work this week, following their Christmas break, as they prepare for their final meet before District 4-4A competition in late January.

The Eagles, who swept the first place team trophies in their last four pre-Christmas meets, will go to Lubbock next weekend for the Lubbock Invitational. That will be followed by the district meet in Fort Stockton on Jan. 23-24 and the regional competition, back at the Pete Ragus Aquatic Center in Lubbock on Feb. 5-7.

Coach Terri Morse said almost all of her swimmers have been working out this week. "I had only one not come to the Christmas workouts, because he's gone the whole two weeks on vacation," she said.

"Right now they're all a little rough around the edges. You can tell they've lost a little endurance, but we should be able to get it back," Morse said.

The January schedule is a little different this year for Pecos. Last season, they had three weeks between their final meet at district competition, and then came back to swim regionals a week later. This time, with two week breaks between all the meets, Morse said, "I think they'll be a little more relaxed for regionals. I won't rest them for district, but I think I can do their normal taper for regionals.

"The lack of an extra week last year threw us off. I don't think they felt rested at all for district or regionals. This time it should be a little better."

Morse said the Lubbock meet, with its large number of Class 4A and 5A schools, will be an all-day affair, starting at 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 9 with preliminaries and continuing with diving at 9 a.m. on Jan. 10 and the finals at 1 p.m. that day.

She added that diver Michael Juarez, who will be seeking to repeat as 1-meter district and regional champion, will also compete in the 3-meter diving event at Lubbock, which will take place during the swimming preliminaries.
