Pecos hosting meet's diving for Monahans

The Pecos Eagles swim team will get to see some of their future regional opponents this weekend, while Pecos' divers will get a chance for an extra performance at home when the Eagles compete in the Monahans Invitational.

The diving competition will be held in Pecos on Friday at 5 p.m., due to problems with the diving board at the Monahans High School pool, while the swimming events will begin in Monahans on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Pecos swept both the boys and girls division titles at the Pecos Invitational this past weekend, and will be facing most of their District 3-4A rivals again this weekend. But coach Terri Morse said the field of non-district schools would be different than a week ago.

"There will be quite a few El Paso schools there," she said. "El Paso Americus, Socorro, Andress, Chapin and Bowie will be there, along with San Angelo Central and Hobbs."

The last three El Paso schools are in Class 4A, and will compete against the Eagles at the Region I-4A meet in Lubbock in February. As for the Lubbock schools that swam in Pecos last week, Morse said, "This weekend is the TISCA meet, so they're all going to that. They brought the ones who didn't qualify for TISCA last week."

Pecos had most of their swimmers and divers available a week ago, but will be a little shorthanded at least during the early part of Saturday's events.

"There are a couple I've changed, but basically everybody is going to be the same," Morse said. "Teddie (Salcido) will swim the backstroke instead of the 200, because Ashley Horsburgh in not going to be there because of the FFA event. Kyle (Winkles) will swim the 200 (freestyle) instead of the 100 and Alonzo (Garcia) is in the 100 instead of the 50, but he's been sick.

"The relays will be a little different, because I'll have kids coming in late from that FFA thing," she added.

The meet is the final one for Pecos before the Thanksgiving break. Pecos' next meet will be the Coker Relays in Fort Stockton the first week of December.
