Eagle coaches set squads for basketball season

By JON FULBRIGHT
Staff Writer

Regular season play opened over the past two days for many area basketball teams. But the season openers for the Pecos Eagles won't come until this Friday night, as coaches Joe Flores and Veronica Valenzuela finalize their varsity rosters.

Pecos' boys will open their season at home on Friday against the Lovington Wildcats, while the girls will play District 4-3A rival Presidio in a non-district game on the Blue Devils' home court. The games will also be the season opener for Lovington, while Presidio's girls started off their season on Tuesday with a 54-35 loss at Alpine.

Both Eagle teams graduated their starting post players from last season, and both Flores and Valenzuela said they'll be minus one returning starter from a year ago.

"I ended up with four returning instead of five, because Stephanie (Herrera) is not playing," Valenzuela said on Monday. Herrera's absences will leave the Eagles with only three seniors on the varsity squad, in forward Leslie Rodriguez, post Vanessa Garcia and guard Mari Mendoza.

Two freshmen, including Herrera's sister Amalie, will start the season on the varsity, Valenzuela said. Adrianna Armendariz is the other, and both already have varsity experience, having played on the Eagles' varsity squad in volleyball this season.

Along with Rodriguez, Mendoza and Garcia, the Eagles' other returning player is guard Danielle Garcia, a junior. Valenzuela said another junior, Lily Valdez, would be on the varsity team to start the season, and it would be rounded out by Jessica Carrasco and Olga Mendoza.

"I've still got a couple of players on the JV that need to play a lot, but hopefully they'll be able to move up if they continue to improve," Valenzuela said.

Flores said last week he would be without senior John Parent at post this year. That left Pecos with only one returning post, in senior Justin Lara.

"We're going to be kind of thin in spots this year," said Flores, who plans to use his other three returning seniors, Oscar Parada, Bino Barreno and Jose Reyes, at guard.

The Eagles will have two other senior guards on the varsity squad, in Victor Reyes and Ricky Barreno, along with junior Saul Pina and sophomore Josh Anchondo. The other posts for Pecos will include a couple of seniors, Daniel Medina and Adam Garcia, and two sophomores, Ricardo Morales and Lupito Bustamantes.

The boys will play two of their first three regular season games at home, then will be back in Pecos only once in December. The girls, meanwhile, won't have any games at home until January, though the JV girls will get to host Fort Davis in December, while the JV boys will host their own tournament the second weekend of the month, while the varsity plays in the Sandhills Tournament in Monahans.
