Eagles' season starting today in Ft. Stockton

The 2003 season gets underway for the Pecos Eagles volleyball team this afternoon in Fort Stockton, though they won't be facing the Prowlers in either of their season-opening matches.

Pecos will take on the Alpine Bucks at the Williams Center in Fort Stockton, as part of a four-way match between the Eagles, Bucks, Prowlers and Van Horn Eagles. Pecos will face Alpine at 5 p.m. and then take on Van Horn around 7 p.m. at the Williams Center. The four-way set-up allows the district rivals - Pecos and Fort Stockton, along with Alpine and Van Horn - to avoid facing each other for now.

The Eagles already have faced the Bucks, though, in a scrimmage game in Pecos this past Friday, and came out on the short end of the final score during the teams' 20-minute match-up.

Coach Becky Granado will be without one returning starter today in senior Stephanie Herrera, and will be going with both a younger and larger varsity roster than in recent years.

She said that while the Eagles did make many unforced errors against Alpine, "I've got to give the young girls credit, because all this is new to them. It's just going to take some time for them to learn what to do, but if we can keep improving every game, I'll be happy."

After today's matches, the Eagles will be entered in the Monahans Sandhills Tournament on Friday. They'll take on Lubbock Cooper and Plainview in pool round play at the Monahans High School gym, with the top two teams advancing to the tournament semifinals on Saturday at the Larned Special Events Center.

Pecos' freshman and junior varsity teams also will open their 2003 seasons tonight in Fort Stockton. The JV will face Alpine and Van Horn at the same time as the varsity, on the side courts at the Williams Center, while the freshman will face Alpine at 5 p.m. and Fort Stockton at 6 p.m.

Pee Wee football registration,

volleyball sign-ups set to end

Registration ends this week at the Reeves County Community Sports and Recreation Department for the girls fall volleyball league, and early sign-ups also will end this week for the Pecos Eagles Pee Wee football league.

Both leagues are open to players in grades 3-6, and the early sign-up for football includes participation on this weekend's clinic for pee wee players.

Registration for the volleyball league ends on Saturday and costs $10 per player, while Pee Wee football early sign-ups end on Friday, and costs $20 per player. Late registration for football is $25 per player.

Meanwhile, sign-ups run through Aug. 29 for the youth flag football program, which is open to boys and girls ages 5-7. Entry fee is $10 per player.

Returned registration forms must be accompanied by a birth certificate and signatures of both parents for both football and volleyball registration. For further information, call the recreation department office at 447-9776.
