Swimmers starting early on 2003-04 season

By JON FULBRIGHT
Staff Writer

The Pecos Eagle swim team will have a little more balanced roster this season, and coach Terri Morse hopes to have a few more divers as well, when the Eagles begin their 2003-04 season in the early fall.

Pecos' first meet isn't until Oct. 4, but the swimmers joined the other sports that begin play in August by getting their workouts underway on Tuesday at the Pecos High School swimming pool.

"We've got 26 out, but some are in other sports, and I've got two still on vacation," Morse said. "But since they're doing their second practice earlier and I'm doing an evening practice, they're able to come to those workouts. So I have more in the evenings than I do in the mornings."

Pecos' boys placed fifth last season at the Class 4A state meet in Austin, while the girls finished 16th at the state meet in Austin. The boys' fifth place finish came despite a shortage of swimmers that at times kept the Eagles from fielding more than one relay team per race in a number of meets and prevented them from having swimmers in the 50 yard freestyle race at district competition.

"Most of our boys are back. We have everybody but Gary (Garcia)," Morse said. "We also picked up two freshmen, and we have a sophomore and senior divers."

Pecos' girls had more than enough swimmers to field multiple relay teams last season, but didn't have any diving entries when district rolled around. This season, Morse said, "We have two freshman girls and some girls who've talked to us about diving who are already at the high school, but I'm not sure about them. "They haven't come out yet, so I'll just reserve judgment."

Morse said the morning workouts usually keep the swimmers and divers out of the pool, working on stretching in the area beneath the stands at the pool. "After that we'll go to the track and do some aerobics stuff, and then today we'll go to the weight room.

"At the evening practices, we'll just swim. I'm trying to get them back into shape, and they're pretty sore right now."
