Graham graduates from West Point
WEST POINT, NY - Cadet Randall Tye Graham, son of Randy and Leslie Graham
of Pecos, graduated from the U.S. Military Academy on May 31.
Graham graduated from Pecos High School in 1999. He was commissioned
a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army upon graduation from West Point. Graham
branch is Armor and will attend Officer's Basic Training at Ft. Knox, Ky.
The mission of the U.S. Military Academy is to educate, train, and inspire
the Corps of Cadets so that each graduate is a commissioned leader of character
committed to the values of Duty, Honor, Country; professional growth throughout
a career as an officer in the United States Army; and a lifetime of selfless
service to the nation
Vice President Dick Cheney was the graduation speaker.
Portillo places in track meets
Ashley Portillo, four years old, of Odessa's West Texas Track Club participated
in the Iraan Summer Track Meet where she placed first in the 50 and 100
meter dashes; the Kermit Summer Track Meet where she placed fourth in the
long jump, second in the 50 meter dash and first in the 100 meter dash;
the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation Region 10 Track Meet where she placed
second in the long jump, second in the 50 meter dash and first in the 100
meter dash.
In the Tall City Extravaganza Track Meet she placed second in the long
jump, second in the 50 meter dash and fourth in the 100 meter dash.
Portillo also completed against 6, 7 and 8 year old competitors at the
Amateur Athletic Union West Texas Association Track Meet where she placed
third in the long jump and third in the 50 and 100 meter dashes.
She is the daughter of Arthur and Sally Portillo of Odessa and the granddaughter
of Tony and Rosie Portillo of Pecos.
OC sponsors free program
Because Odessa College wants to help high school seniors and graduates
prepare for college, the college is offering a free program on Tuesday,
Aug. 12 called the Senior Scholar Experience.
Students and parents who sign up for the program will attend workshops
on how to choose a career, how to take standardized multiple-choice tests
and how to pay for college.
At 9:30 a.m., Career Services will help attendees explore how to choose
a career and decide what is important in the process. The standardized multiple-choice
test workshop will follow an hour later. Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m.,
and at noon, visitors will learn the ins and outs of paying for college
including federal financial aid, scholarships, grants and loans.
Attendance is limited to 50 students and parents. The reservation deadline
is at 5 p.m., Aug. 6.
