Helmet fitting for HS gridders set for next week

Helmet fitting for Pecos Eagle high school football players will be held next week at the Pecos High School Field House.

Coach Patrick Willis said helmet fitting for juniors and seniors will be next Wednesday, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon and from 1 to 5 p.m., while freshman and sophomores should go to the field house on Thursday during those same times to get their helmet fitted for the upcoming season.

Two-a-days for Pecos varsity, junior varsity and freshman players will get underway at 7:30 a.m. on August 4. Physicals were held on Thursday for all Pecos high school and junior high athletes, and 175 boys and girls showed up at Dr. Orville Cerna's office for the reduced price physicals, according to trainer Joel Birch.

Dr. Cerna will still be giving physicals from now through the start of workouts for fall sports, but at the regular price of $25. Physicals can also be taken by students through other area physicians in order to be eligible to participate in athletics.

Graham captures tennis title at tourney

Pecos Eagles tennis player Trent Graham took first place recently in the North Richland Hills Championship Junior Major Zone Tournament in Fort Worth.

Graham defeated Ryan Walters of Fort Worth, 6-4, 6-3; Bradley Underwood of Colleyville, 6-3, 3-6, 11-8; Brian Stanley of Fort Worth, 5-7, 7-6, 10-4, and Chris Ramsey of Abilene, 6-4, 6-0, in the finals of the USTA-sponsored event. The win qualified him for the super-championship level of the USTA.

Graham earlier this summer placed second in the San Angelo Highway 80 Tennis Tournament.
