Willis makes HS coaching staff assignments

By JON FULBRIGHT
Staff Writer

New Pecos Eagles head football coach Patrick Willis has got his high school level coaching staff set for football and his coaching position assignments made up for the start of preseason workouts next month, but is still waiting to fill a couple of junior high positions and waiting to see where the varsity and junior varsity Eagles will be practicing when workouts begin on Aug. 4.

Willis, who was named the Eagles' new head coach and athletic director two weeks ago, said he and his six assistant coaches would handle both the varsity and JV teams, and that the assistant coaches "are going to coach one side of the ball as far as JV and varsity are concerned."

Willis said he will handle coaching the quarterbacks, as well as serving as his own offensive coordinator this season. The former Abilene Cooper assistant coach under Randy Quisenberry is bringing in the Cougars' one-back offense for the Eagles to run this season, after Pecos had run the option the past two seasons, first under Gary Grubbs and then under Fred Carter.

The other coaching assignments on offense have Michael Valencia working with the running backs, Joe Flores with the offensive linemen and Junior Williams with the receivers. On defense, Willis said Elias Payan would be the defensive coordinator and handle the secondary, while Robbie Ortega will work with the linebackers and Charlie Wilson with the defensive linemen.

Willis said Gaylon Doan and Jerry Parent would be the coaches working with the freshman Eagles this season.

Valencia has been moved up from serving as eighth grade head coach, while Wilson moves up from the freshmen level, to fill the vacancies left by the resignations of Brian Gibson and Ronnie Molina. Willis said the ninth graders will go with two coaches this season, but he has one other junior high position to fill.

"We're interviewing one today," he said. The interview comes prior to Thursday's Pecos-Barstow-Toyah ISD board meeting, and the specific junior high assignments will be made after the positions are filled.

High school workouts will begin before the next school board meeting in August, and two weeks before seventh and eighth grade preseason workouts will begin. In between now and Aug. 4, Willis said he's hoping workers on the new PHS softball field will have their dirt work completed, so that the field can be used for preseason workouts.

"We're crossing our fingers. If not, we'll go over to the baseball field," he said. Dirt work currently is being done to create an infield area on the northwest side of the high school football practice field, while the construction of stands and light towers are scheduled to follow and be ready by the time softball practice gets underway in late January.
