Eagles to see new courses at district

There won’t be that many changes in the Pecos Eagles 2006 varsity girls golf schedule from recent years during pre-district play. But the Eagles will have two of their three rounds of the District 3-3A tournament at new locations, and will make a pre-district visit to one of those sites as part of their March schedule.

Coach Tina Doan’s team will open their spring schedule on Feb. 3-4, with a trip to the San Angelo Girls Classic, which is where Pecos has started spring play for the past several seasons. The remainder of Pecos’ February and early March schedule is also unchanged, with trips to Big Spring, Fort Stockton, Midland and Andrews for the varsity girls squad, while the JV will host its own tournament on the final day of February, and compete in a one-day JV tourney earlier in the month at Andrews.

The main changes are in district. Pecos will travel to Seminole for the opening round of their 54-hole 3-3A tournament on March 27, and will close out district with an April 12 visit to Lamesa. It will be the second visit in three weeks for the Eagles there, as Pecos will compete in a one-day tournament on March 23 at the Dawson County Golf Course.

In-between, the Eagles will play the second round of district at the Ward County Golf Course in Monahans. Pecos will be trying to regain the 3-3A title from the Loboes this season, after Monahans took the district title in 2004 and 2005. Pecos won district in 2003 and placed second to Snyder at state that year. The past two seasons, the Eagles have advanced to regionals as district runner-up, and last season, junior Shelly Martinez advanced to Austin as a medalist, where she placed third in the Class 3A state tournament.
