Three die in Pyote RR crash

PYOTE, Dec. 1, 1999 - Three Kermit women heading to their jobs at Anchor West in Pecos were killed last night when their 1997 Ford Mustang was hit by a two-car train south of Pyote.

The three women were the only passengers in the vehicle when it collided with the train at the intersection of Texas Highway 115 and Spur 57, located on the south side of Pyote near the Interstate 20 overpass.

The accident was still under investigation by Trooper Darren Storer of the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Officers think that Tomasa Heredia Aguirre, 45, Avilia Heredia Ramos, 49, and Gloria Ofelia Trevino, 20, were on their way to work in Pecos when they collided with the train. The three were headed southbound on Highway 115 when according to Storer's report, the eastbound Union Pacific train struck the vehicle on the passenger side.

Storer said that there are no gates at the crossing but the crossing was equipped with warning lights.

"The light system was checked and found to be functioning properly," Storer said.

At this time, Storer added, no charges will be filed against the train engineer.

Aguirre, Ramos and Trevino were reportedly headed to Pecos to work on the night shift at Anchor West. Aguirre and Ramos were pronounced dead by Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Pascual Olibas of Monahans, while Trevino died while being taken by emergency medical service personnel to Ward Memorial Hospital in Monahans.

The accident was the worst involving a car-train collision in the Trans-Pecos area in over a decade. Four people were killed in Pecos in an April, 1989 car-train collision a crossing on the west side of town.

Cop stop nets trio on heroin charge

By ROSIE FLORES
Staff Writer
PECOS, Dec. 1, 1999 - A routine traffic stop Tuesday landed three people in Reeves County Jail, facing felony charges of possession of a controlled substance.

Pecos Police Officer Jeff Green conducted a traffic stop on a 1984 Cadillac, which was occupied by the three subjects. Green stopped the car because he observed a traffic violation, according to police reports.

"After Officer Green stopped the subjects I met with him and assisted him with the stop," said Pecos Police Investigator Paul Deishler.

Upon conducting warrant checks on the subjects computer records showed one of them, Chris Pacheco, 39, had an outstanding felony warrant for a parole violation.

Pacheco was placed under arrest on the warrant charge, according to Deishler, while Juanita Sanchez Gomez, 42, the driver, was placed under arrest for the traffic offense.

Upon conducting an inventory of the vehicle, Pecos Police Officer Armando Granado discovered a substance, believed to be heroin, inside the trunk of the vehicle

At this time the other passenger in the vehicle, Regina Dennette, 31, was placed under arrest for the offense of possession of a controlled substance, according to Deishler.

Pacheco and Gomez were also charged with offense of possession of a controlled substance.

"The vehicle that the subjects were occupying was seized, due to the fact that narcotics was being transported within the vehicle," said Deishler.

All three subjects are in Reeves County Jail facing felony charges of possession of a controlled substance.

More arrests could be forthcoming, according to Deishler.
