UTPB to offer new degree program

Approval to implement a new bachelor's degree with a major in Multidisciplinary Studies this fall at The University of Texas of the Permian Basin has been given by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

UTPB Vice President of Academic Affairs William Fannin said, "The new undergraduate degree will provide an excellent option for students seeking to become elementary classroom teadchers. Today's elementary schools are built on a system of homeroom teachers who are expected to understand and apply basic knowledge in a number of areas. Those who major in multidisciplinary studies are better able to handle the varied elementary school curricula."

The bachelor of arts degree in multidisciplinary studies with elementary certification consists of a 131-138-semester credit hour major that does not require a minor. Courses for the degree will concentrate on the four foundation areas recommended by the Texas Education Agency - language arts and reading, mathematics, science, and social studies and economics - as well as the two enrichment areas of fine arts and health and physical education.

Fall classes begin at UTPB on Aug. 26, with late registration continuing through Sept. 1.

For more information on the new degree program or how to apply for admission, call 915-552-2605.
