Tredaway to perform in London parade
Shanna Tredaway, a sophomore at Pecos High School, and a member of the
Varsity Cheerleading Squad, is one of over 1,500 high school students from
across the U.S. who will perform in the London Parade on New Year's Day
in London, England before two million spectators lining the parade route
through the heart of London.
The participants, all star members of Universal Cheerleaders Association
(UCA), will tour the European city during their seven day trip.
The All Stars are selected as the top seven percent of the cheerleaders
who attend the summer camps, based on superior cheerleading and dancing
skills.
"We are celebrating our 12th year back to London and these talented
young people really enjoy the opportunity to show their cheerleading and
dance skills to a very enthusiastic international audience," said Dean
Oblonsky, UCA International Event Coordinator. "They really love performing
together and the camaradarie of the group is infectious. Both the kids
and the people of London consider this event a real treat," he said.
UCA, a Division of Varsity Spirit Corporation, is the premier cheerleading
instructional organization in the country, founded in 1974 by Jeff Webb.
UCA along with Universal Dance Association (UDA), will train more than
200,000 elementary, junior high, high school, college cheerleaders, dance
teams and mascots from across the country.
UCA/UDA also conduct the National Championships for both high school
and college cheerleaders and dance teams. The championship finals are nationally
televised from Disney/MGM Studios for ESPN.
Shanna is the daughter of Suan and Steve Cross, and the granddaughter
of Betty Cook.

UTPB to offer new degree program
Approval to implement a new bachelor's degree in environmental science
this fall at The University of Texas of the Permian Basin has been given
by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
UTPB Vice President of Academic Affairs William Fannin said, "The new
undergraduate degree is based on needs that exist in the Permian Basin
and the state. We believe that this degree will provide our students with
the education to pursue a number of career opportunities."
UTPB Professor of Environmental and Natural Science Seyf-Ollah Ehdaie
agrees. "There are job opportunities for environmental scientists in government
agencies, public schools, and industry. Environmental science is a `hot'
program and we are pleased to offer this degree for our students," he said.
The bachelor of science degree in environmental science will integrate
courses in biology, chemistry, geology and environmental science with applied
field and laboratory experiences.
Fall classes begin at UTPB on Aug. 26. For more information on the new
