Acosta celebrates birthday

Maritza Lupe Acosta celebrated her third birthday and baptismal, Aug. 7, with family and friends.

She is the daughter of Melissa Garcia.

Maternal grandparents are Ernesto and Lupe Baca.

Great grandparents are Thomas and Alicia Chavez.

Godparents are Sammy and Martha Chavez.

Nursing students set for graduation

Seventeen students from Odessa College's School of Vocational Nursing, Monahans Extension, class of 1998-1999 will graduate this week in Odessa.

The ceremony will be at 7 p.m., Friday, Aug. 6, in Deaderick Auditorium on OC's main campus followed by a reception in the Community Room on the second floor of the Student Union Building.

Students graduating and receiving a certificate of completion will be Nicole F. Bennett, Tony M. Carrasco, Patricia Cordova, Felisa Fuentes, Nicole Smith Gates, Ty Haulk, Joshua T. Hodgkins, Maria M. Levario, Wendy J. Mosier, Lori Creel Porter, Pete E. Ramos, Eva Lujan Rodriguez, Terkeya Q. Smith, Jessica L. Tellez, Josephine Gonzales Todd, Lori A. Wesley and Debbie A. Winemiller.

The LVN option in nursing is designed for those students wanting to complete their education at the vocational level. Successful completion of the vocational level qualifies the students as an eligible candidate to take the National Council for Licensure Examination for vocational nursing.

Free tour at caverns planned

On Wednesday, Aug. 25, the self-guided cavern tours at Carlsbad Caverns National Park will be free, as will admission to most national parks throughout the country.

The free day is provided for in Public Law 100-203, passed in 1987, and is a means of showing appreciation to people for their support of national parks. The free day also comes on the 83rd anniversary of the establishment of the National Park Service.

The only fees which will remain in effect Aug. 25, are those for the ranger-guided Kings Palace and other off-trail trips. The Kings Palace trips are $8 for adults and $4 for children ages 6-15, while off-trail trips vary from $7 to $20 for adults.

The self-guided Natural Entrance and Big Room tours for which fees will be waived on Wednesday, Aug. 25, are normally $6 for adults and $3 for children ages 6-15.

The park visitor center will be open from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 25. The Natural Entrance self-guided trip will be available from 8:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. The Big Room tour is available from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
