Senior League to face Odessa in opener

PECOS, July 15, 1999 -- The Pecos Senior League All Stars will face the Odessa Floyd Gwin All-Stars in the first game of the Section 1 subsectional tournament, set for Friday evening in Lubbock.

The game will be played at 6 p.m. at Lubbock Western Field, with the winner advancing to the semifinals of the double-elimination tournament at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The losers will play at 6 p.m. Saturday, with the winner there facing the loser of Saturday's second game between the District 1 (Amarillo) and District 2 (Lubbock) champs in a 7 p.m. contest on Sunday. The championship game is set for 6 p.m. on Monday with a second game, if needed, at 8:30 p.m. that night.

Pecos went undefeated in winning the District 4 title, beating San Angelo Western, 15-1, San Angelo Northern, 25-0, San Angelo Lake View/Tri County 11-4 and San Angelo Southern, 13-2.

Floyd Gwin also went through their tournament undefeated, routing a pair of Midland teams while taking two close games from Odessa Kellus Turner to earn their berth in the subsectional.

Unlike district play, losses in the subsectional will carry over to the sectional finals, scheduled for next week against the winner of the subsectional that includes teams from the Abilene and Dallas/Fort Worth areas. Pecos' Junior League All-Stars came through the loser's bracket last season to reach the sectional finals, but were beaten by an Abilene team that had gone undefeated through their tournament.

Also playing in tournaments this weekend are Pecos' three girls softball teams. The 10 and under, 11-12 and 13-14 year old squads will be competing at the University of Texas-Permian Basin softball complex in Odessa beginning on Friday.

Opening ceremonies are set for Friday afternoon, and each team is scheduled to play at least one game on Friday.
