Summer golf in full swing
Before they work their way to the golf course, a lot of young golfers
are learning their skills on the football field at Crockett Middle School.
The elementary-age boys and girls are joining others in junior high
and high school during the week in the Pecos-Barstow-Toyah summer golf
program.
"Monday through Thursday we have all the kids at Crockett working on
their chipping," Pecos Eagles girls golf coach Tina Hendrick said.
"On Friday we come out here (to the golf course) with the junior high
and high school kids and they work on their putting and playing holes."
She said there are 65 players overall in the program, with the biggest
group, 24, in Grades 1 through 3.
"We've got 20 in sixth and seventh grade, 16 in fourth and fifth grade
and 15 high school kids out."
While the younger group goes through just learning the basics, the older
ones get to play nine practice holes on Friday, though Hendrick said even
in that group there are some newcomers.
"Right now I'm working with the ones who never have played nine holes
before. After I get them started I'll play with a different group each
Friday," Hendrick said.
