Winners named in science fair
Pecos had five winners in the Permian Basin Regional Science Fair held
recently, at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin, (UTPB), in Odessa.
Over 400 area students competed in the annual fair for prizes and awards,
including calculators, college scholarships, trophies, and medals. Only
winners from local science fair are eligible to participate in this prestigious
event.
Hannah Paz, of Crockett Middle School, won second place in the Eighth
Grade Behavioral Science Division, with her project, "Battle of the Sexes."
She tested students to determine who followed directions best, boys or
girls. Her research which found girls to be the best at direction following,
won her a place in the State Science Fair for Junior High Students, later
this month, in Austin.
Also bringing home awards were four Bessie Haynes students. Eleanor
Mason won both second place in the Fourth Grade Chemistry Division and
a Special Award from the National Corrosion Engineers with her project,
"Detergent Dilemma," comparing popular laundry detergents' ability to remove
stains. Second place in the Fifth Grade Behavioral Science Division was
taken by Joe Rudy Rodriguez and Junior Navarrette, with their project,
"The Blue Soda Test," a study in the area of sublimenal suggestion.
"Which Dishwashing Liquid is Best," by Bianca Guerrero, received a special
award from the National Association of Corrosion Engineers for comparing
the effectiveness of popular dishwashing liquids.
