Oasis of West Texas roundupBy DEBBIE MEREDITH Special Correspondent This year's Balmorhea Heartwalk will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 24. There will be a hotdog cookout at noon for all walk participants. Plans are in the works for a pizza party for the class that raises the most money. All Heart Survivors in the area are invited to come out and walk. Survivors will recieve a red ball cap to wear while they walk to signify that they are heart disease survivors. The walk is to raise the community awareness of heart disease. For further information contact Mrs. Hoffmeyer at 375-2574. Wedding bells will ring Oct. 3, for Teresa Hoffman and Cody Shackleford at 2 p.m. at the Balmorhea Baptist Church. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall. Everyone is invited to help this couple celebrate their union. Cross Country runners have had two meets this season under the coaching of Adolfo Garcia. Their first meet was Sept. 5 in Odessa. Placing and times are as follows: Manny Mendoza 18:11 for 5th place; Kevin Rodriguez 20:38 for 25th place and Danny Guebara 32:45. On Saturday, Sept. 19, the team travelled to Seminole. In the Junior High Division placing are as follows: Girls: Fabiana Lujan 18:50 for 63rd place; Trena Jurado 23:50 for 71st place; Boys: Sammy Dominguez 14:11 for 15th place, recieved a medal; Keith Baeza 14:58 for 24th place; Robbie Mendoza 17:01 for 40th place and Jourmain Matta 18:01 for 42nd place. Junior Varsity Girls: Natalia Lujan 19:36 for 50th place; Junior Varsity Boys: Kevin Rodriguez 20:17 for 7th place, received a medal; Jerry Mendoza 20:28 for 10th place, received a medal; Danny Guebara 26:32 for 39th place; Varsity Boys: Manny Mendoza 17:57 for 4th place, received a medal. Next meet will be Saturday, Sept. 26 in Big Spring. Good Luck Runners! Junior High Bears went up against Buena Vista Thursday night. The Bears had a very sluggish start but came back to play in the last half and won the game with a score of 39-25. Varsity Bears will travel to Borden County tonight. Go Bears! Girls Volleyball Junior High beat the Valentine Pirates last Sat. as did the Varsity Girls. On Tuesday of this week they took on Marathon Mustangs. The junior high team beat the Mustangs two games to 0. But the Varsity dropped their match winning only one out of three games. The girls are off now until Oct. 6 when they open district play against Buena Vista. Today marks the end of the first six weeks of school, so parents can look for those report card to come out on Friday, Oct. 2. And parents can also keep up on the October school activities by picking up a monthly calendar at local businesses or at school on October 1.
