Junior high netters begin district

tournament after taking Monahans title

Pecos Junior High tennis players will be in Monahans this afternoon, competing in the District 4-3A Junior High Tournament, after taking first place this past weekend in tournament play on the Loboes' tennis courts.

Coach Paul Briones said the matches would begin at 4 p.m. today and would involve only three of the six district teams at the high school level, Pecos, Monahans and Fort Stockton.

"Our team is blessed with great talent. They step up and deliver under pressure," he said. "I am proud of them. If everyone is healthy, we should be in the running for the district title."

Briones said this past weekend the Eagles' eighth grade tennis players took first place in their division at Monahans, collecting two division and one consolation title along the way. Dina Ortiz placed first in girls' singles and Amalie Herrera took consolation in that division, while on the boys' side Jesse Hanks captured first place in the boys singles division.

Hanks won an 8-6 victory over Ludlum of Sweetwater in his final match, and Ortiz won first over Korley of Wink, Briones said. He added that Hanks normally plays doubles, but was in the singles competition due to the absence of his partner, Francisco Ornelas.

"These kids know how to deliver under pressure. They have been playing like t his since last year when they were seventh graders," the Eagles' coach said.

Joseph Tarin, Crystal Ikeler, Amber Pando and Syra Mendoza also contributed to the victory, Briones said.

In the seventh grade division, Chris Sotelo earned the consolation title in boys' singles, while Sada Orona was fourth in the girls singles division. Vanessa Galindo and Yezaria Navarrette also contributed to the effort.

After today's junior high school tournament, Pecos' high school tennis players will be in Monahans on Friday for their district tournament. Singles play will begin at 9 a.m. and run all day, while doubles play will be held on Saturday.
