Jr. high teams end up 3rd, 4th at Monahans

The Crockett seventh grade boys placed third and Crockett's three other track teams ended up fourth this past weekend at the Walker Junior Relays in Monahans.

The host Loboes won all four division titles. The Eagles' seventh graders finished with 105 points, while the eighth grade boys ended up with 45 points. On the girls' side, Crockett's seventh graders scored 56 points and the eighth grade girls finished with 62 points.

The seventh grade girls picked up two third place medals in the field events, from Daphne Navarrette in the triple jump and from Sandra Orosco, who finished in a three-way tie for third in the high jump. Gia Lujan had the Eagles' other field event points, finishing fourth in the shot put.

In the running events, the girls' best finish was a second by Denise Cazares in the 800-meter run, with a 2:58.2 time. Kayla Herrera was sixth in that event, while Ashley Ornelas was third in the 100 meter hurdles, Cazares was sixth in the 400 meters, Monica Garcia was fifth in the 300 meter hurdles, and in the relays, Pecos finished fourth in all three races, with Cazares, Navarrette, Orosco and Neyva Rodriguez running the 1600 meter relay; Navarrette, Ornelas, Orosco and Cheyenne Carrasco the 400 meters and Carrasco, Navarrette, Rodriguez and Ornelas the 800 meters

The boys' 400 meter relay team of Drake Bradley, Matthew Flores, Juan Garza and Marcos Luna won first place with a 51.9 second time, while the 1600 meter relay team finished second. Neither the seventh nor the eighth grade boys' teams had 800-meter relay squads.

Individually, Luna was second and Flores third in the 100 meter dash with 12.6 and 12.8 times, and Bradley finished fifth in the race, while Flores and Luna were second and third in the 200 meters, with times of 27.3 and 27.6 seconds. Gerald Saenz was third and Vincent Palomino fourth in the 400 meter dash for the Eagles' other running event points.

In the field events, Flores won the long jump with a 15-foot-11 effort. Bradley was third there and placed second in the high jump, clearing 4-foot-8. Flores placed sixth there, while Justin Contreras and Quinton Roman were fourth and sixth in the shot put, and Luna finished sixth in the discus.

The eighth grade girls got a first place finish in the discus from Adriana Armendariz, with a throw of 70-feet. She also finished sixth in the shot put, while Bianca Baeza was third in the triple jump, Dina Ortiz was third in the shot put, and Jenny Palomino was fourth in the long jump.

In the running events, Baeza was second in the 400 meters with a 1:12.1 time, while Rebecca Martinez was fifth and Honesty Medina was sixth; Palomino was fifth and Baeza sixth in the 100 meter dash, and Armendariz was sixth in the 200 meters. In the relays, Armendariz, Baeza, Palomino and Cassandra Terrazas placed third in the 400 meters and Martinez, Medina, Armendariz and Terrazas were fourth in the 800 meters.

The eighth grade boys got a first from Larry Johnson, who won the 200 meters in 23.9 seconds, after placing second in the 100 meters with a 11.4 time. Travis Walker was fourth, Uric Salgado fifth and Murphy Tremble sixth in the 400 meter dash; Salgado was sixth in the 200 meters and Jaime Morales was sixth in the 1600 meter run. Tremble, Walker, Johnson and Chris Parks placed fourth in the 1600-meter relay, the lone relay for the eighth grade boys.

The Eagles' only points in the field events came from Johnson, fourth in the high jump, and Ruben Salgado, sixth in the shot put.

The seventh and eighth grade track teams will be at Fort Stockton this week, and then will host the District 4-3A Junior High Track Meet on April 5 at Eagle Stadium. Pecos' high school track teams will be in Monahans this Saturday, for the annual Sandhills Relays.
