Alzheimer's group plans meeting
The Alzheimer's Association STAR Chapter will sponsor a Pecos Support
Group meeting at 4 p.m., Thursday, March 13 at the Pecos Senior Citizen's
Center, 119 S. Cedar.
This group meets the second Thursday of each month.
Topic will be: " Death and Dying."
Church of Christ sets special lessons
Church of Christ, 4th and Bois d'Arc, will be sponsoring a
special guest in a series of lessons, beginning at 10 a.m., March 16.
The lessons will begin with the firs scheduled for 10 a.m., March 16 and
will feature Eddie Whitten.
Theme for the lesson on Sunday, will be: "What is That to Thee": at 11
a.m., the lesson will be: "What Meaneth This?" and at 6 p.m., the lesson
will be: "Rightly Dividing the Word."
On Monday, March 17, the series will continue at 7 p.m., with the theme,
"The New Birth."
"Let the Lower Lights Be Burning," will be the theme at 7 p.m., Tuesday,
March 18.
On Wednesday, March 19, at 7 p.m., theme for the lesson will be: "But
Who Are You?"
Eddie Whitten worked in the industry for 30 years before going into full-time
work in the church.
He attended the Brown Trail School of Preaching, graduating in 1969.
He preached in San Antonio for two years before returning to Brown Trail
in 1971. He served as the Administrator for the school of preaching for
11 years and as Director for 5 ½ years. He also served as an elder
for the Brown Trail Church for 15 years.
Whitten is the author of a book on the Minor Prophets, and has edited
several lectureship books. He appears on lectureships and gospel meetings
across the country each year and has preached in a number of foreign countries.
He has written articles for numerous periodicals. He is a former staff
writer for the Contending for the Faith, and is the coordinator for lectureship
for the Gospel Journal. He currently serves as one of the preachers for
the Northeast church of Christ in Hurst.
Whitten and his late wife are the parents of three daughters; nine grandchildren
and 12 great-grandchildren.
Annual poster contest scheduled
Texas Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn invited school children to
draw pictures of their dream careers and enter the seventh annual Texas
Tomorrow Funds Poster Contest. Winners will receive four-year Texas Guaranteed
Tuition Plan scholarships covering tuition and required fees at a Texas
public university. Runners-up will receive one-year Texas Guaranteed Tuition
Plan community college scholarships.
The Texas Tomorrow Funds Poster Contest is open to elementary and middle/junior
high school students. The winner in the elementary school category and the
winner in the middle/junior high school category will each receive a four-year
Texas Guaranteed Tuition Plan scholarship sponsored by Belo Corp. and Farmers
Insurance Group. Intel Corp. will award a four-year scholarship in a third
contest category, the Intel Math, Science, Engineering and Technology (IMSET)
scholarship. The IMSET category is open to any contestant whose drawing
depicts a career in a technical or scientific field.
Four runners-up in the elementary school category will receive one-year
community college scholarships sponsored by Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Texas
and three runners-up in the middle school category will be awarded one-year
community college scholarships sponsored by Fannie Mae.
The contest entry deadline is Tuesday, April 29. Winners will be announced
in May. Complete contest rules and entry/parental consent forms are available
from local schools and libraries, or they may be downloaded from the Texas
Guaranteed Tuition Plan Web site at www.tgtp.org.
The Texas Guaranteed Tuition Plan allows families to set up a flexible,
affordable plan to prepay their children's college tuition and required
fees at today's prices. The State of Texas guarantees to cover those expenses
when the children are ready for college, no matter how much costs may have
risen. The current Texas Guaranteed Tuition Plan enrollment period ends
