Eagles in need of home wins against Loboes

PECOS, Jan. 21, 2003 - The playoff hopes for both the Pecos Eagles boys and girls basketball teams probably hinge on getting victories tonight over Monahans at the Pecos High School gym.

It's the start of the second half of the District 4-3A schedule for Pecos' girls, as the 1-4 Eagles host the 4-1 Loboettes starting at 6 p.m. After that, Pecos' boys will try for their first win after three losses to start district play, when they take on 2-1 Monahans, starting at about 7:30 p.m.

The boys played much better on Friday at Kermit than they did in their last home game, a 58-55 homecourt loss to Presidio last Tuesday. But going up against a stronger team, the Eagles weren't able to overcome first half foul trouble suffered by leading scorer Isaiah Armendariz. The Yellowjackets turned a seven-point deficit into an eight-point lead, widened that to as much as 14 points, then survived four Eagle comeback attempts to win 62-49 and remain tied for first in the district standings.

Monahans is a game behind Kermit and Greenwood at 2-1 after beating Presidio in overtime on the Blue Devils' home court, 73-68. Earlier this month in non-district play at Fort Stockton, the Loboes downed the Eagles by a 70-64 final score.

"Every game from now on is a must-game for us," said coach Joe Flores following Friday's loss. "We're going to treat every game as a playoff game."

Pecos' girls are in the same situation after their 55-39 loss to Kermit. The Eagles fell into an early 14-6 hole, rallied to tie the score, but saw the Jackets go on a 14-2 run at the end of the first half and the start of the second to earn the victory.

Jackets' post Amber Broadway did most of the damage, scoring 27 points, most of that in the second half. "Our outside girls got caught too far out there instead of staying inside, so we only had one girl behind her," said coach Veronica Valenzuela. "We just stopped talking."

The Eagles will face a similar problem tonight with Loboettes' post Laura Crumrine. She scored 15 earlier this month, when Monahans defeated Pecos at home, 54-37, in the District 4-3A opener for both teams. Jessica Martinez had 13 points to lead Pecos in scoring.

Play opens tonight with the junior varsity games at 4:30 p.m., while the freshmen boys will face Monahans in the old PHS gym at 6 p.m.
