Netters get two shots at regionals in spring play

The difference between Class 4A and Class 3A tennis play will become apparent for the Pecos Eagles starting next week, when the Eagles begin the spring portion of their 2002-03 schedule in Monahans against the Loboes.

The Eagles will have two chances to advance to regional competition during the spring, both as a team and in individual play. Pecos advanced to regionals each of the past four seasons as a member of District 2-4A, but those matches were played in the fall.

Pecos played a fall season against their new district rivals this year, but in non-district matches. They split with Monahans, lost to Fort Stockton and defeated Greenwood, the three other schools playing tennis in the district. The district matches will be this month, when the Eagles face the Loboes, then host Fort Stockton and Midland Greenwood to determine the regional qualifiers.

Regionals themselves won't get underway until the end of February in Levelland, and the Class 3A state tournament will be the following weekend. After that, the season continues, with tournaments in Monahans and Fort Stockton, before Pecos goes back to Monahans for the District 4-3A Tournament on April 4-5. The top two finishers in each event there will qualify for regionals later in the month.

Coach Mike Ortiz said going into the spring season, "I'll be without one of my girls (Natalia Ornelas) who is still in basketball, and lost one of my boys to grades."

After Tuesday's 4 p.m. match at Monahans, the Eagles will host Fort Stockton on Jan. 25 and Midland Greenwood on Feb. 1 in their district team matches. Pecos also has non-district matches scheduled against Lamesa and Brownfield and host their own tournament in February.
