Garcia deployed in assault ship
Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Jesus Garcia, son of Hilario C.
Garcia of Pecos, is halfway through a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean
Sea and Arabian Gulf while assigned to the amphibious assault ship USS Nassau,
based in Norfolk, Va.
Garcia is one of more than 4,000 Atlantic Fleet sailors and Marines aboard
the ships of the USS Nassau Amphibious Ready Group.
During the first half of the deployment, Garcia's ship participated in
a month-long operation in Kosovo (Dynamic Response '02).
USS Nassau supports amphibious operations using Landing Craft Air Cushions
(LCACs), which are specially-designed Hovercraft that deliver vehicles and
equipment to the beach. The ship also has conventional landing craft and
helicopters embarked, and is equipped with medical facilities staffed by
Navy doctors, dentists, nurses and corpsmen.
Garcia is a 1999 graduate of Madison County High School of Madison, Fla.
and joined the Navy in March 2000.
