Barrera selected as Employee of Month

The Recreation Department in Reeves County Detention Center-I is proud to recognize Recreation Specialist III, Esteban B. Barrera Jr. as November's 2002 Employee of the Month.

Officer Barrera was also recognized last year as November's Employee of the Month.

Officer Barrera is married to Irma Gomez Barrera and has two children, Amy Lee Barrera who resides in Austin and works as a legal assistant. Jacob Barrera, who currently is attending Grinnell College in Iowa and is a second year student who is studying medicine.

He began his career with the Reeves County Detention Center on June 5, 2000. He quickly advanced and was promoted to the Rec. Yard on Oct. 8, 2000, as Recreation Specialist II.

Barrera was promoted to Recreation Specialist III on Dec. 9, 2001. "Officer Barrera has proven himself to be extremely reliable and professional," said RCDC Warden Rudy Franco. "His work ethics and attitude are of the highest level and he is a prime example of the officer's employed at the Reeves County Detention Center," he said.

Officer Barrera is dedicated to the operation of the Reeves County Detention Center. He previously was employed for 21 years as a power plant operator for Freeport McMoran. Since his tenure with the Rec. Yard, Officer Barrera has accepted additional responsibilities and accomplishes all his assigned tasks, according to his supervisors at the facility.

"When I used to work in Custody, I saw the Rec staff and what they did and I wanted to do the same," said Barrera. "I was given the opportunity soon after I was hired and have never regretted making that choice," he said.

"I really like my job and position as an Arts Program Officer, because no two days are the same," said Barrera.

As a Recreation Specialist III, Officer Barrera's primary responsibilities are to maintain security and control of the Recreation Department, making sure the inmates are conducting their recreational activities in a safe manner.

Also, he is responsible for the Arts Program _ hobby craft, leather craft, art painting, Indian craft, and the music room.

Overall, Officer Barrera's high standards and quality of work performance and self-motivation have earned him this honor as Employee of the Month.

"We wish him continued success in his career with the Reeves  County Detention Center," said Franco.
