Eagles' teams open practice for fall season
Practice began this morning for the Pecos Eagles' football, volleyball
and tennis teams, as the Eagles prepare for their first season at the Class
3A level of competition.
The Eagles dropped to Class 3A this year after 22 seasons in Class 4A,
but for the first three sports to begin play _ football, volleyball and tennis
_ Pecos' new District 4-3A figures to be tougher than District 2-4A, where
the Eagles played the last four seasons.
About 40 varsity players were out for the first football practice this
morning, while 30 freshman and junior varsity players also were at this morning's
workout. Coach Fred Carter said the Eagles would be practicing twice a day
this week, at 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.
Coach Becky Granado had eight juniors and seniors out this morning, and
expects to eventually have 11 players in that group. The Eagles volleyball
workouts also are two-a-days, but divided into groups, with the freshmen
and sophomores practicing later in the morning and in the afternoon, while
the juniors and seniors will come back and work out from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight.
Coach Mike Ortiz only had about a half dozen players out this morning,
but said he expects to eventually have 26 players this season. Scheduling
for Class 3A team tennis is slightly different than at the 4A level, so Ortiz
said the bulk of Pecos' season this year will be in the spring semester.
