Western ends 9-10 LLers' year, 11-12 squad opening

The season came to an end for Pecos 9-10 year old Little League All-Stars on Thursday in San Angelo, while the 11-12 year old squad will start their tournament play on Saturday in the San Angelo area.

Playing at San Angelo Western on the Fourth of July, the 9-10 year olds saw San Angelo jump out to an 8-2 lead after three innings, then held off a Pecos rally to post a 14-7 victory in an elimination round game of the tournament.

A two-out double and a throwing error in the third inning was the big play of the game, as it turned a 4-2 lead by Western into an 8-2 advantage. The Little Leaguers were able to take advantage of a series of walks to cut the lead to 12-7 in the fourth inning despite collecting no hits until the fifth, when Arthur Navarrete and Jake Varela opened with singles. But San Angelo pitcher Blake Herring shut down the Little Leaguers after that, and Western added two more runs in their final at-bat.

Western's win moved the team into a 6 p.m. game tonight against San Angelo Lake View, which lost to San Angelo Northern on Thursday, 2-1, in the tournament semifinals. That game will also be on Western's home field.

Pecos 11-12 year old Little Leaguers will be playing about 10 miles southeast of San Angelo on Saturday, in Wall, where they'll face either the host Wall squad or Ballinger in a 5 p.m. game. The winner of Saturday's game will face the winner of the opening round game between San Angelo Northern and Winters, in a game scheduled for 11 a.m. on July 7.

Coach Ray Palomino said last week that most of this year's group of 11-12 year olds were on the 9-10 year old team two years ago, when Pecos lost to San Angelo Northern in the tournament finals.

The finals for the District 4 Tournament for the 11-12 age group are scheduled for July 13 and 14, if necessary, and the winner of the tournament will advance to the Region I Sectional Tournament, which will be held in Midland this year, Palomino said.
