Williams named as coach for North All-Star squad

By JON FULBRIGHT
Staff Writer
Pecos Eagles head baseball coach Bubba Williams has been selected as one of the assistant coaches for the North All-Star team in the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association All-Star game, to be held next month in Round Rock.

"I got a call last night from one of the coaches," Williams said today. "It shocked me to be one of the coaches for the All-Star Game. It's a great honor, and I've never had this happen in 30 years."

The game will be held on Monday, June 17 at the Dell Diamond, which is the home of the Texas League's Round Rock Express. "I have to be there on the 14th, and I believe there's a Home Run Derby on Sunday and then the game is the next day."

Williams will be assistant coach for the North All-Stars, who will be coached by former Pecos player Johnny Carpenter, currently head coach at Coronado High School in El Paso.

Williams didn't know which players would be part of the North squad, but said "I think (Andrews pitcher) Brock Johns will be there." Johns shut out Frenship last Friday 7-0 in the Region I-4A quarterfinals, and the Mustangs went on to sweep the Tigers after Frenship swept the Eagles in the area round of the Class 4A playoffs the previous weekend.

Williams is a Pecos High School graduate, and served for a decade as assistant coach under Steve Peters before taking over as head coach in 1982. The Eagles made the playoffs this year for the 11th time in 20 seasons Williams has been head coach.

His teams have reached the playoffs each of the past four years, advancing to the regional semifinals in 1999, and qualified for the playoffs in all but one year between 1984 and 1992, advancing to the Region I-4A semifinals in 1985 and 1987 and to the regional finals in 1986. Pecos was co-district champions those three seasons and won the District 2-4A title outright in 1999, 2001 and this past season.
