Graham earns 2nd in Amarillo tennis tourney

Pecos High School student Trent Graham placed second recently in the Amarillo Championship Major Zone Tournament, a USTA event for junior tennis players.

Graham won four of five matches at the tournament, defeating Drew Wellsfry of Wichita Falls, 7-5, 6-1; Kirk Logan of Midland, 6-2, 6-2; Jonathan Meyer of Carrolton, 6-2, 6-2 and Doug Clifton of Plano, 6-4, 6-1, to reach the finals. In the title match, Graham lost to Jay Wofford of Lubbock, 6-2, 6-4.

Meanwhile, Pecos High School Tennis Coach Mike Ortiz said the USTA would be holding a tennis carnival at the Pecos High School tennis courts for elementary school-age players, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21.

Admission is free, and the event will include both games and door prizes, Ortiz said.

"I expect a representative from the main (USTA) office in Austin out here," he said. "In February we had 260 kids out here for the last tennis carnival, so I expect more than that to be there this time."

Sign-ups start for men's hoops,

youth T-Ball, chess at rec office

The Reeves County Community Sports and Recreation Department is signing up players for men's basketball and youth T-Ball leagues, and is also enrolling children in its summer chess classes at the recreation department office in the old Pecos High School gym.

Registration for the men's league is $22 per player, with a limit of 10 players per team. For T-Ball and chess, registration is $10 per child.

The T-Ball league is divided into two age groups and is open to children between the ages of 4 and 7. The chess classes will be divided into beginners and intermediate classes and will run two days a week for six weeks.

Parents can pick up enrollment forms at the recreation department office at the old Pecos High School gym during regular office hours. Deadline to register for both activites is Friday, May 24. For further information, contact the recreation department office at 447-9776.
