Loboes rout Eagles in final period
Things fell apart at the finish for the Pecos Eagle girls basketball team
on Tuesday night in Monahans, as the host Loboes turned a 12-point lead into
a 32-point victory over the Eagles.
Monahans outscored Pecos in the final eight minutes of play 22-2 to win
by a 56-24 final score, for their first win of the season. "At halftime we
were only down by nine, but in the fourth quarter it got away from us," said
Eagles' coach Veronica Valenzuela, who added that the Loboes used a size
advantage inside to get most of their points.
"They did have a couple of girls who could shoot from the outside, but
mostly they got their points from the inside and off rebounds. My girls had
a tough time getting into position, and I lost my biggest girl early," she
said. "Tiana (Terry) twisted her ankle early in the game, so we were a little
shorthanded as far as rebounding goes."
Terry, who missed two weeks during the Eagles' volleyball season with
the same injury, left after scoring only one point in the first period. Monahans
came out of that quarter up by a 9-5 score, then widened their lead to 26-17
at halftime. The lead was 34-22 after three periods before the Loboes had
their big final period, holding Pecos to just two free throws by Stephanie
Herrera.
No Eagle fouled out of the game, but Pecos committed 26 fouls and sent
Monahans to the foul line 34 times, including two on a technical foul against
Kathy Maldonado. "The official said she slammed the ball down, but we didn't
see it," said Valenzuela, while adding Maldonado played more than expected
after missing last week's games due to a knee injury.
"I didn't want to play Kathy too much, but Stephanie had three fouls at
the beginning of the third quarter and had to come out, so we had trouble
running our offense," she said.
Jessica Rodriguez led Pecos with eight points, while Emrald Setzler topped
Monahans with 11. The win improved Monahans' record to 1-4, while Pecos falls
to 1-3 going into their game on Friday at Presidio.
Pecos' boys had their game on Tuesday at Alpine cancelled due to the Bucks,
football playoff game this week. Weather permitting, the Eagles are scheduled
to play on Thursday in the Andrews Tournament.
