Eagle girls gets lessons on offense

By JON FULBRIGHT
Staff Writer

Instead of going to a scrimmage on Wednesday, the Pecos Eagle  girls' basketball team will be going to school today on their new  offense, Eagles' coach Veronica Valenzuela said.

The Eagles, who open their 2001-2002 season a week from tonight against the Crane Golden Cranes, will be working with Sul Ross State University coach Dr. Chet Sample on the new offensive scheme Valenzuela wants her girls to run this season.

With only four players back off last year's squad that finished fourth in the District 2-4A standings, "I figured it was too early for us to go to a scrimmage yet," said Valenzuela, who added that the Eagles will also skip this weekend' scheduled scrimmage at Odessa Permian and will get their first action against the Cranes on the road next Tuesday.

Senior forwards Christina Arenivas and Jessica Rodriguez, senior guard Kathy Maldonado and junior post Tiana Terry are the returning players from last year's team that went 4-6 in district play and were 7-15 overall. Valenzuela said she's still waiting to decide who will be the remaining players on the varsity squad this season.

"I'm just kind of looking at everyone to see what they can do," she said. "I've had a few juniors and seniors who've come out who didn't play last year.

"I'll probably let them know for sure (about the varsity roster) on Thursday. Right now we're just working on our fundamentals and are starting to work on the offense," Valenzuela added. Overall, there are 31 players out for girls basketball this season.

A lack of size inside will again be one of the Eagles' main problems this season. Terry is the only returning player for Pecos, and Valenzuela said, "Christina might have to do like she did last year and play both at the wing and at post."

Pecos' boys also open their 2001-2002 season a week from tonight, in Monahans against the Loboes. The Eagles are scheduled to scrimmage the Alpine Bucks this Saturday.
